A Sky Full of Love: A Novel by Lorna Lewis

Following a harrowing disappearance, a woman returns home to her family and a life-changing secret in a powerful novel about betrayal, resilience, and love’s unbreakable bonds.

After fifteen years in captivity, Nova Lefleur is free, back home, and reunited with her Louisiana family. Through her ordeal, she never forgot them. They never forgot her either. But things have changed since Nova’s been gone.

Nova and her encouraging seventeen-year-old daughter, Skye, are getting to know each other for the first time. Her husband, Quinton, is rebuilding a relationship with a wife he thought was gone forever. And Nova’s sister, Leah, is overjoyed and overwhelmed.

Leah shares a secret with Quinton, neither can bear to tell the woman they cherish. Not yet. Five years ago, bonding over grief and finding a reason to smile again, Quinton and Leah were married. When it’s time for the truth to come out, they could lose Nova all over again.

As Nova is eased back into a life both familiar and unfamiliar, she and her family must confront their deepest fears, the choices they made, and the choices to come that will reshape each of their lives forever.

When she’s not writing her next novel, Lorna enjoys spending quality time with her husband and their two beautiful children, finding joy in family life, and drawing inspiration from her own experiences to enrich her writing.

SLM: When did you first realize you wanted to be a published author?
I first realized I might have a gift for writing back in high school, when all of my English teachers encouraged me to major in journalism. But that wasn’t something I wanted at the time. Honestly, I only wrote because it was required. It wasn’t until years later, after I’d graduated from college and was teaching second grade, that I truly discovered how much I loved writing.

I noticed a gap in the curriculum between second and third grade, and during the summer of 2009, I decided to create something to bridge that gap for my students. I started writing short stories, and somewhere along the way, the writing bug hit. I didn’t want to stop. After I finished their workbook, the desire to keep writing took over, so I decided to try my hand at a novel. That project became my first book, Dirty Little Secrets. I’ve been writing ever since.

SLM: If you had to describe yourself as a writer in three words, what would they be?
The three words I would use to describe myself as a writer would be: dramatic, passionate, and authentic (at least I try to be).

SLM: How did you become involved with the subject of your book?
Oh wow, I love sharing this story. I’ve actually had the idea for it for many years. I’d say the seed was planted back in 1990, after my mom passed away from cancer. I kept thinking, What if she wasn’t really gone? What if a doctor fell in love with her, took her, and made us believe she’d died? I guess I was a writer before I even realized it.

That idea came and went over the years, but it always lingered in the back of my mind. Then one day, I was talking with someone who had known both of my parents. They mentioned how much my dad still loved my mom, after more than twenty years and a second marriage.

That’s when the seed started to sprout, and the second part of my “what if” took shape: What if the doctor who kidnapped my mom let her go, and she came back? What would my dad do? Would he stay with his wife, or reunite with my mom? From there, A Sky Full of Love was born.

SLM: Introduce us to your most recent work. What is the key message in the book?
My most recent work is A Sky Full of Love, a deeply emotional story about grief, resilience, and rediscovering yourself after unimaginable loss. It’s about a woman who returns home after being held captive for fifteen years, only to find that the world has moved on without her. Her sister has married her ex-husband, her daughter has grown up, and the life she once knew no longer exists.

The key theme of the book is healing. It explores how we rebuild after trauma, how we find our place again, and what it means to forgive the unforgivable. It’s a story about learning that even when everything feels broken, there’s still beauty left to hold on to.

SLM: Introduce us to the main characters in A Sky Full of Love and bring them to life!
Fifteen years ago, Nova Lefleur was the life of the party. She was bubbly, outgoing, and, as my grandfather used to say, someone who “never met a stranger.” But that’s not the Nova you’ll meet now. She’s not the same woman she was fifteen years ago. She’s quieter, more guarded, which is understandable, considering everything she endured during her years in captivity.

One thing you should know about Nova, though, is that she’s a survivor. She’s learned how to adapt and adjust to life’s most unimaginable situations. Even after her release, returning home meant facing a world that had moved on without her. Her family had moved on, too. There’s no clear place for Nova anymore, so she has to create her own.

She’s learning how to be a mother to a teenager she barely knows and an ex-wife to a man she still loves with her whole heart. What makes Nova compelling isn’t just her survival, it’s her softness, her courage, and the hope she dares to hold onto, even when it feels like she’s lost everything.

SLM: Do you outline and plan, or is your writing more organic?
My writing process is very organic. Once I know the plot and the characters, I just start writing. I’ve tried outlining, but I never stick to it, so I’ve pretty much given up on that. Honestly, when readers tell me a scene caught them by surprise, I tell them it surprised me, too. I never really know what’s going to happen until it happens.

Now, I will say writing this way means I end up doing a lot of rewrites. My ideas aren’t always organized at first, but this is the only process that’s worked for me so far. The process may be messy, but it feels honest, like I’m truly telling the story that the characters want me to tell and not the one I want to tell. That’s what matters most to me.

SLM: Can you share some ways that readers can support you?
One of the best ways readers can support me is by ordering a copy of the book, whether it’s the ebook, paperback, hardcover, or audio version. Every purchase truly makes a difference. They can also help by telling a friend who loves a good story and encouraging them to buy a copy.

Leaving a review on Amazon, Goodreads, or wherever they like to share their thoughts. Another great way to show support is by sharing information about the book on their social media pages and tagging me. A short post or even a photo with the book would help spread the word.

If they’re part of a book club, I’d love for them to host a book discussion and invite me to join either in person (depending on the location) or virtually. Or maybe they’re not in a book club, but want to host a discussion with friends and family, that’ll be great too.

SLM: What other projects are you working on at present?
Right now, I’m working on my next novel, The View from Upstairs, which is set to release in September 2026. This story has the deep emotional and psychological layers that I loved exploring in “A Sky Full of Love”, but it goes even deeper. It follows two women whose lives become intertwined by grief, guilt, and the need to find purpose again.

The View from Upstairs is about one woman, in the depths of grief, who believes kidnapping her neighbor will help save them both. In this story, we learn that good intentions born from a broken mind never end well.
