Spotlight Author: Pat G'Orge Walker
Give the Gift of Knowledge Campaign

EDC Creations, The Sankofa Literary Society and The Black Authors Network announced the launch of their 2009-2010  "Give the Gift of Knowledge Campaign," bringing readers and authors together to help improve literacy. In 2004, during the Christmas holidays, Ella Curry, the founder of EDC Creations, reached out to women's groups and literary organizations to help promote early literacy by giving new books to children from low income homes.

Today, the "Give the Gift of Knowledge Campaign," seeks to expand even further! “Based on the “each one teach one,” model, our goal is to help people introduce reading and new books to their family and friends,” says CEO and founder of EDC creations, Ella Curry. “Instead of giving expensive gifts that don't shape lives----let's “Give the Gift of Knowledge” and help to strengthen our future generations!”  We now invite you, the readers, to join us by supporting the authors below and buying books as gifts!

Each year thousands of people — educators, concerned parents, community leaders, authors, poets and publishers — devote their time and resources to presenting the reader with great books! However, too many outstanding books do not get the attention and reader support that they deserve. It is our mission to connect readers with these hidden gems and bring them books that will change their lives.

Each week EDC Creations will sponsor bookclub chats, live readings from authors, podcast presentations, seminars, community relations discussions, and radio shows that deliver the best our writers have to offer. All we ask is that the readers of the world spread the word.  Check out the information below and invite this author to chat with you and 5-10 friends via Skype, tele-conference or a speaker phone meeting.  If you would like to spotlight this author on your blog, website, magazine or radio show, email Ella Curry at:  elladcurry@edc-creations.com    If you have already read the book, share your reviews with us by clicking here.

Pat G'Orge-Walker aka Sister Betty
The First Lady of Gospel Comedy Writing and Performing

Award winning author/Christian comedienne/Speaker

“Promoting books and performing comedy are very arduous tasks particularly when you are trying to expose the church to a new method of bringing people to Christ. No matter how funny my routines or stories may be there will always be a message of God’s love and redemption.”  -- Pat G’Orge-Walker, The First Lady of Gospel Comedy

Pat G’Orge (pronounced Gee-or-jay) - Walker is in a league of her own. This accomplished Christian author and comedienne has an amazing mind and talent for turning her observations of church and black church life, in particular, into gems of sidesplitting humor. It is her own special gift from God that enables G’Orge-Walker to depict the often ridiculous antics of church folk. She does it without subverting the Good News or watering down the potency of its message.

Pat G’Orge-Walker has led a colorful life professionally, to say the least. She is a former music industry veteran who has worked for several major labels including Epic, Def Jam and Columbia. She cut her chops as a singer by performing with the legendary 60s girl group, Arlene Smith and the Chantels (“Maybe”) as well as with the gospel groups The Spiritualettes and The Heavenly Two. And she has written as well as acted in stage presentations.

In the 1970s G’Orge-Walker began penning short stories featuring a main character that has an intimate and impacting encounter with God Almighty on the telephone, the now infamous Sister Betty. But it wasn’t until 1997 that she actually self-published the first in a series of books and that book – Sister Betty God is Calling! – is now being sold on Amazon.com as a collector’s item.

“The fact that there has never been anything like my gospel comedy stories never crossed my mind until I was presented with the BWA 2000 Golden Pen Award for creating a new genre in fiction—gospel comedy.”

God called Sister Betty once more in 2003 and G’Orge-Walker released Sister Betty God’s Calling You, Again! (Kensington Books) thus marking another first for both the author and the publishing house that launched an inspirational department, a result of signing G’Orge-Walker. And G’Orge-Walker was thrust onto the scene in a rocket as a much sought after and highly acclaimed speaker and stand up comedian with her one-woman shows.

Kensington followed its endorsement of G’Orge-Walker with the commission of another novel featuring Sister Betty, “Mother Eternal Ann Everlastin’ is Dead,” which was released in 2004. If the author pushed the envelope with Sister Betty God’s Calling Again! then she mailed the letter with Mother Eternal Ann Everlastin’ is Dead.

“Some people thought I went too far in exposing some of the spiritual flaws of the church by giving the characters names such as a Sister Ima Hellraiser or Bishop Was Nevercalled. Unfortunately, these characters exist and any resemblance to these characters, whether dead or alive, is a doggone shame.”

The characters still exist and G’Orge-Walker continues to pull from a seemingly inexhaustible pool of material to create more novels and build her comedy routine. In between the laughs, Pat G’Orge-Walker the wife, mother and church deaconess is deadly serious about serving God. Some consider comedy to be entertainment first but not G’Orge-Walker who views it as ministry first.

“Promoting books and performing comedy are very arduous tasks particularly when you are trying to expose the church to a new method of bringing people to Christ. No matter how funny my routines or stories may be there will always be a message of God’s love and redemption.”

Somebody's Sinning in My Bed by Pat G'Orge-Walker

“It is my intent to draw attention to God’s message of love through humor. If we can love God whom we have never seen, yet cannot love the ones we can see, then we have missed God’s entire message.”  -- Pat G’Orge-Walker

Chyna and her sister Janelle are always moments away from a catfight. They love each other, but Janelle has never forgiven her sister for swiping her first love, Cordell. That was ages ago, and now Chyna is showing off as the First Lady of New Hope Assembly, a church that’s caught between the old ways of Holiness and new ways of serving its community. New Hope’s leader, Reverend Grayson Young, is also caught…in the infamous Sweet Bush lounge, an establishment well-known for adult pleasures.

With the church congregation running wild in the aftermath of her husband’s scandalous behavior, Chyna turns to her sister Janelle for guidance. But if Chyna thinks she’s getting sympathy from Janelle, she’d better think again, because Janelle’s got her own crisis. And when Cordell suddenly comes back into the sisters’ lives, what follows are squabbling, chaos, and surprises that show just how hard the road to salvation really is…

Excerpt from Somebody's Sinning in My Bed by Pat G'Orge-Walker

"Cordell DeWitt was not only Chyna's ex-husband but also had been Janelle's first and only true love. Her soul mate, she'd thought at the time. Actually, she hadn't changed her mind about that. He was still that. She'd chased her lost love for him from bed to bed since he'd left her for Chyna.

Never finding what she'd had with Cordell made Janelle wild. She wore infidelity almost like a badge of honor every time she'd committed adultery with someone's husband or stole a man. She was doing to other women what she'd felt her sister had done to her. She'd kept up her reckless behavior even after months of pleading for forgiveness from Chyna. Eventually she'd finally forgiven Chyna for marrying Cordell, her Cordell. Or perhaps she hadn't."

BOOK REVIEW FROM APOOO

Title: Somebody’s Sinning in My Bed

Author: Pat G’Orge-Walker
Apooo: 5;  Amazon: 5

Heading: God’s Divine Forgiveness

Author Pat G’Orge-Walker penned a novel that demonstrates God’s divine forgiveness, even in the midst of the messiest lives. In Somebody’s Sinning in My Bed, things do not look like they will ever again be normal in the lives of Chyna and her sister Janelle after the death of Chyna’s husband, Reverend Grayson Young. Usually the death of a leader scatters the flock, but upon the good Reverend’s death, the higher echelon of New Hope rallied together to save their “good” reputation and remind the church they needed to go back to the “ole time way.”

Chyna had enough to contend with upon her husband’s untimely death, but the reappearance of someone from her past yet connected to her sister, Janelle, brought up past hurts, unforgiveness and battles with emotions once believed to be dead and buried. To top it all off, First Lady had to figure a way to deal with the threats (yes threats) coming from the Pastor’s Aid Committee and all they were throwing her way. But someone should have reminded those folks about messing with God’s woman and hindering what He was doing in Chyna’s life. God will move folk, kill them, if necessary.

In steps Deacon Pillar to help Chyna, Janelle and all the mess that was created and brought to the open in order to experience God’s divine forgiveness. Sometimes the hardest thing in life to do is forgive oneself. Deac always knew what to say, even when he was not supposed to say it.

I really enjoyed Somebody’s Sinning in My Bed, a story that I found timely for this day as it is presented in God’s Word, “He that is without sin among you...” I recommend this book to everyone, especially those who need to learn the real meaning of forgiveness; God addresses all parties involved. --- Review by Sharel E. Gordon-Love, APOOO BookClub

Reader's Discussion Guide:

1) Do you believe God bestows His gifts on the flawed?
2) Do you believe God weeds His human garden according to your life's seasons.
3) In the secular community it is quite common for a woman to be held to a higher social standard, than a man. Do you see the same contradiction or hypocrisy in the church?
4) Do you believe God has forgiven you or are you waiting for mortal man to give you a stamp of approval?
5) As a Christian, what would be a good reason for you to commit adultery or cheat?

Pat G’Orge-Walker is the Essence bestselling author of Somebody's Sinning In My Bed, Somewhat Saved; Cruisin’ on Desperation; Mother Eternal Ann Everlastin’s…; Sister Betty, God’s Calling You, Again!; and contributed a short story to several anthologies. Being a preacher’s kid gave her a quirky perspective on church, inspiring her to create a one-woman comedy show centering on Sister Betty, whose unchristian-like behavior blocks her blessings. Join us in taking a inside look into the making of Sister Betty and the books.

Ella:   Tell us about your passion for writing. Why do you write? What drives you?
I believe my love for words play an integral part in my passion for writing. I need to write as much as I need air to breathe. It is like being constantly pregnant and needing to deliver.

Ella:   Finish this sentence- My writing offers the following legacy to future readers...
...permission to be different in the face of naysayers. There were times when I was faced with the challenge of delivering God's message through humor. Of course, laughter, although permitted through scripture, didn't seem to connect with those staunch Saintly folks. Never let anyone step on your creativity when your creativity is to enlighten and provide entertainment.

Ella:   Where are you from?   How did you start your writing journey?
I am from Mount Vernon, New York. My writing journey began in elementary school and was mentored by my third grade teacher, Ms. Bobbie Madison.

Ella:   Give us the synopsis of the book being discussed, Somebody's Sinning In My Bed.
Pat G’Orge-Walker delivers a wickedly funny, uplifting novel of love and betrayal…good karma and bad karma…sin and redemption

Ella:   Who are your two main characters and what do you like most about them?

The main characters in my book are two sisters; Chyna and Janelle. What I like about Chyna is that she finally resolves to not think less of herself than God does. What I like about Janelle is her fire. Janelle's a person who loves deeply and that makes her dangerous on several levels. However, Janelle is also able to suck on a pigfoot while drinking Cristol and make it look classy.

Ella:   What makes your book stand out and would entice a reader pick it up?
My books are pretty much known for their covers. The fire red cover, shy-yet flirty female and the church steeple are strong images. I also think the title is provocative; Somebody's Sinning in My Bed.

Ella:   Ultimately, what do you want readers to gain from your book?
I want the reader to remember that we're birthed in complexities and need. Life is a journey that will make you or break you. If the reader can remember that God is always in control and whatever you go through...God's got the end already tied up and gift-wrapped for you if you walk in faith. However, one should never play with God; a reprobated mind is a terrible thing to have. And finally, one should never think less of themselves than God does.

Ella:   What is the most surprising thing you have learned in creating books?
The most surprising thing I've learned to date is that readers come in all shapes, colors, sizes and persuasions. You cannot please them all and that can be quite sobering if you rely solely on the reader for inspiration. So you must write for you and remain honest in what you write.

Ella:   What would you say has been your most significant achievement as a writer?
I believe my most significant achievement as a writer would have to be the across the board, in terms of gender, race, secular and Christian acceptance of my work. It's a great reward in and of itself.

Ella:   What advice would you give a new writer?
I would advise a new writer to study their craft, pray often and surround yourself with like-minded people. Also in getting representation make sure they are reputable and don't jump at the first person/agency to say they can make you a star or get your books published.

Ella:   Name 3 things that it takes to make a successful author, in your opinion?
Three things that make a successful author in my opinion are: (1) the ability to craft a good story that the reader won't have to read two-three times to get its meaning. (2) Have a marketing plan that is doable and then do it along with prayer. (3) An honest relationship with your editor is key.

Ella:    What can we expect from you in the future?
I will have one more book coming out in 2010. It is tentatively titled, "Jessie's Jewels." After that there will be more stories involving Sister Betty and her zany cohorts.

Ella:   Share with us your latest news, awards or upcoming book releases.
I'm currently working on my next novel and eagerly awaiting the BEA where Somebody's Sinning in my Bed will debut before it's August 2009 release. Of course, I'm still out and about performing and traveling with my Somewhat Saved Comedy Show.

Somewhat Saved

Drama here, drama there, drama everywhere…

With all the drama going on in the world today, you would think church would be the one place you would expect to find peace and solitude, right?

Well this is definitely not the case in the small town of Pelzer, South Carolina. In fact, if you know what’s good for you, you’ll run the other direction as fast as you can when you see Crossing Over Sanctuary Temple. Why you ask? Because the colorful characters – Sasha Pray Onn and Bea Blister, members of the Mother’s Board – are not exactly the epitome of saintly church mothers. They are troublemakers, rabble rousers, and yes, they revel in it. And if hell-raising in Pelzer ain’t enough, Mothers Pray Onn and Blister take their shenanigans on the road to Las Vegas, better known as Sin City, and they fit right in.

They’ve traveled to Las Vegas to the annual Mother’s Board conference, hoping to oust Sister Betty, their arch rival, out of the nomination for president of the Mother’s Board. In the midst of all their chaotic, comedic capers, secrets from the past come back to haunt them in the form of Zipporah Moses, an aspiring songstress, who unwittingly shakes up the family tree, causing even more drama.

Although Somewhat Saved is the latest novel in the “Sister Betty” series, this was my first “Sister Betty” read ever! I’ve heard that Walker’s stories are laugh out loud and uproariously funny; so I went into this read with those expectations. Though the antics of the characters were indeed laughable, but the seriousness of the underlying message of salvation, redemption, forgiveness and honesty quietly, but effectively, shines through.

"Christian comedy fiction at its best." --Library Journal on Mother Eternal Ann Everlastin's Dead

May 29, 2004, 5 Star review:
MOTHER ETERNAL ANN EVERLASTIN'S DEAD is a light hearted parody of a centuries-old institution; the African-American Church. It proves to be a satiric yet uncannily believable portrayal of the various faces of church folks and their oft times melodramatic way of life. Overflowing with bizarre and often scathing humor Pat G'Orge-Walker does a tremendous job in poking fun at the greed, hypocrisy and pretentiousness that goes on in the name of religion. This incredibly humorous story takes on a life of its own when megalomaniacal Mother Eternal Ann, the congregations chief benefactor, drops dead slumped over the church's cash register, apparently from a heart attack. The rumor mill immediately starts churning and soon word gets out that she had actually died of an overindulgence of York Peppermint Patties, which coincidentally were linked to the demise of her two husbands.

When it becomes known that Mother Eternal Ann's last wishes was for her friend Sister Betty to distribute million dollar checks to three 'mega-pastors' at a conference in Baltimore, the resident pastor, Reverend Knott Enuff Money is chagrined. He forms his own Baltimore bound crew, all the time scheming to abscond with the checks. The boisterous hilarity reaches fever pitch, with the farcical antics of the entourage, led by Sister Betty, with Reverend Knott Enuff Money and his scheming cortege in tow.

MOTHER ETERNAL ANN EVERLASTIN'S DEAD has a depth that transcends simple satire. The characters are well developed, though outrageous, which lends to the deeply entertaining quality of the book. Pat G'Orge-Walker's apparent ability to keep readers captivated with the ludicrous antics of her characters makes for a rip-roaringly comical read. She has scored a definite coup with this one.

Sankofa Literary Society Interview for "Somewhat Saved"
by Essence Best Selling Author Pat G'Orge-Walker

Website: http://blacklitmedia.wordpress.com

1. Why are Father/Daughter relationships so important to you?
Answer: In the beginning of the book I share with the readers the letter I had placed in my father's casket. This particular letter, written in 1992, has been used for many father/daughter discussions. My father was a very well known pastor, song writer, community activist and well liked... but I didn't know him. It wasn't until later in life when I learned that he'd always viewed me as being like him. In his eyes, I was so strong that I didn't need the same attention as my other siblings. He was so wrong. I probably needed more.

The reason father/daughter relationships are so important to me is the total dynamic of male/female relationships in its most natural and basic form. I truly feel that the positive; and the negative, to a lesser degree, between parent/child is the fertile ground for growth, understanding, love, and the furtherance of wisdom. The positive way a father treats his daughter will give her the values, boundaries, and intuitive skills with which to interact with her own male/female issues. I often congratulate the men I see who are not only with their daughters, but converse with them.

2. Are there repercussions from a stale or stalled relationship with God?
Answer: Yes, I do believe it. The Bible teaches that having a dishonest or customized relationship with God will lead to a reprobated mind. Sometimes when we don't do what we know to do, long enough, the view is colored. And as His sheep we'll no longer know His voice.

3. Why was it so difficult for Mother Pray Onn to accept responsibility for an life-changing, negative, act perpetrated when she was younger and less wiser?
Answer: Sasha Pray Onn grew up in the church. She sang gospel music which was how she met Jasper. She had a form of religion but not a relationship with God. As she continued to grow into her role in the church ultimately as the President of the Mothers Board, she did what most will do. Sasha compartmentalized her past actions. For her what was in the past needed to stay there. She learned to hide her sins behind her "hallelujahs." Even when confronted with what she'd done to Zipporah she chose to ignore the repercussions. Instead she chose to embrace her perceived "righteous" standing, at that moment, with God. "Sorry" was a word none of those "Hellraisers'/Pray Onn's" ever learned to say when they could always pass the blame.

4. Sister Betty enjoyed many years of a close relationship with God. Why would she suddenly choose to disobey and remain in her comfort zone?
Answer: There are times when many of us who enjoy a close relationship with God get a little too comfortable. When there is a period of "peace" we embrace it as a blessing. When it is time to move out of the comfort zone we declare it as the work of the devil. In Sister Betty's mind she didn't see a need for her to become the President of the Mothers Board. She'd never been a member of the Mothers Board before, the pastor that nominated her was new to the church and didn't know her history and she saw no need to compete or be bothered with her nemesis's Sasha and Bea. Even when confronted with a sign (those arthritic and clapping knee caps) she'd always associated as coming from God, she bucked. No matter what Christians say about their deep abiding faith, there are always situations that cause one to question it. She was no different.

5. What was it about the "homeless" that caused you to include it in the story?
Answer: I had a daughter that was placed in a homeless situation. She was so talented, so business-minded but couldn't seem to catch a break. The building that she was placed in was once the building where my mother once lived before it was turned into a homeless shelter. She was also placed in my mother's exact apartment. She is now doing very well in the legal field but went through that storm. I wanted to let the readers know that we shouldn't always judge a person because of where they are at any particular moment. Help them and see where they can go.

6. How did you manage to embed such serious issues within a humorous setting?
Answer: Being a survivor of incest, rape and domestic violence, before God placing a wonderful and God-fearing man in my life, I've learned to turn lemons into lemonade. I learned that those evil acts did not define me and through it all, I kept a sense of humor. Now fast forward and I'm making a living making others laugh... Ain't God just amazing! He can make it so your latter years are so much more than your former. Those experiences helped to shape who I am .... and I think I turned out pretty amazing :-)

9-11….. What Have We Learned?
by Essence Best Selling Author Pat G'Orge-Walker
September 10, 2008

Like so many here in the United States and abroad I will never forget that Tuesday morning, September 11, 2001. I awoke somewhat sadden that my mother would’ve turned eighty-three that day and she was no longer with us. Hardly two hours later the sadness was replaced and forever marked by another event.

I turned on my television in time to watch the second plane hit the World Trade Center. I thought it was a movie. When I discovered it wasn’t I was completely floored. It took me several hours to discover that my youngest daughter was in another building and she, too, witnessed the destruction but was safe.

During that day and for many days after there was a common love and unity around the United States unlike I’d ever seen in lifetime. Black, white, brown, yellow, Christian, Jew, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, gay, straight, young and old, along with too many to mention, came together in common disbelief, strength, compassion and just plain-old common decency. I, like many others, went about handing out copies of the American flag and gathered items together to bring to firehouses. I attended prayer services and kept busy. Keeping still was just too painful.

What happened to us? An historic election! What should be a celebration of just how far we’ve come has only exhibited just how far we have not. Many could argue, “Who cares what the rest of the World thinks about Americans? Well, I argue… even if the rest of the World’s opinions never mattered we, as Americans, should be ashamed.

How many more disasters must occur before we learn? I’m not going to preach. Instead, I’ve read every description from “Sambo to Porch Nigger” as referred to President Obama. And the other side is no better. Whitey, Honky and Cracker are still being bandied about in response and sometimes as a lead. These are some of the most insensitive, libelous, salacious and just downright stupid and racist remarks, from various Blogs, brought to the forefront by this election. There’s no more hiding racism… some are wearing it proudly, right next to their flag pin.

You can be certain that when those planes struck the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and flight 93, death and chaos had no race preference. The rain will always fall on the just and the unjust. I pray God’s continued grace and mercy upon us. And may God be to those who suffered a loss on 911 whatever they need Him to be.

If we can love God whom we have never seen, yet cannot love the ones we can, then we have missed God’s entire message.

Authors Supporting Authors Article
by Essence Best Selling Author Pat G'Orge-Walker
Reprint August 15, 2009

First, I'd like to thank ASA for the opportunity to support a common cause. It's important that authors come together, for the greater good, which is ... supporting literacy and our craft.

Having said all of the above....Why can't we come together?

It is important that we share news, experiences and every so often-- give a literary hug to one another. How do we do it? I'd like to give an example.

In the mid to late 1990's I was blessed to create friendships with online Guru's such as Dr. Maxine Thompson, Delores Thornton and Dr. Rosie Milligan. I mention those three although there were several others. However, for the purpose of this piece...they're the standouts.

Dr. Maxine Thompson:  Without so much as a face-to-face meeting with many of the authors at that time she freely shared information. Long before there was the Dr. Maxine Thompson radio show, there was the Maxine Thompson's "Black Butterfly" newsletter. In that newsletter, she freely shared promotional ideas, marketing strategies, and most importantly, secrets to the craft of writing. Notice I said, "Free."

Delores Thornton:  Delores Thornton created the first Nationwide Authors Support Group. She made it her mission to help self-published authors gain entry into libraries, Independent bookseller lists, as well as hosting online Writing Symposiums.. She encouraged authors nationwide to send their promotional items to each other for distribution wherever they went. In doing so authors on one side of the nation could have authors on the other side promote their books along with their own. And, it was done long before the rise in gasoline and air travel. It was done to handle a need for greater cross promotion and exposure. There were also large posters created with the bookcovers of many authors. Those posters were displayed at various events. "Free"

Dr. Rosie Milligan:  Dr. Rosie Milligan was and is a "One Stop" for self publishing. She does everything from writing syndicated columns reflecting the current atmosphere for self-publishing as well as how to navigate the precarious industry lane to success. She's also the owner of Milligan Bookstore on Manchester Avenue in Los Angeles, CA. Every year, Dr. Milligan hosts the "Black Writers On Tour" event. It is an event where there is no stone left unturned on the self-publishing landscape. Although there is a registration fee for the event... the wealth of knowledge and contacts far exceeds the initial layout.

**Note: It was because of Dr. Milligan's generosity and need to help self-published authors that my initial "Sister Betty, God's Calling You" short story book landed a major publishing deal. Dr. Milligan took the initial book and placed it in our Ingram catalogue to ensure it's exposure.

Love Went To Heaven by Pat GOrge-Walker
Reprint from article published in 2000

On Monday, February 21, 2000 around 10pm there was a lot of activity going on in Heaven. God was smiling, more than usual, and was eagerly awaiting a very special soul. He turned to one of His most trusted angels and with joy said, "It's time. Bring him home." All of the angels, except a little one, ran with haste to prepare a magnificent homecoming.

The little angel awed by this, more than usual Heavenly joy, tugged on the robe of one of the older angels and asked, "What are we celebrating? Who could be so special that God would prepare such a homecoming?"

"Joe Herbert Acker," answered the older angel, as he spread his wings skyward, higher into the heavens and obediently added more stars to the night sky.

The little angel spread his tiny wings and rushed after the older angel. "We have souls coming every second, every minute, every hour and every day. What makes this man so special?" the little angel repeated.

"As deep as the oceans, as high as the sky, as low as the lowest valley and as wide as the earth itself, all unique and handmade by God and yet, none as special as Joe Herbert Acker." The Angel replied, and raised his arms, as he calmed the wind on God's orders.

"How can this be? Those are all wonders that God called into being from the very beginning. Surely, this Joe Herbert Acker cannot be more special than these."

"He was made of love." Answered the angel as he whirled his arms and caused the moon to shine a little brighter on God's orders.

"Were not all men made of love. Did not God send His son Jesus to redeem all men, in the name of Love?" insisted the little Angel.

"Yes, all of that is true. But not all men follow love. Not all men give and give and give from a never ending well of love. Not all men can lie down at night and have no fear if they are called. This man, Joe Herbert Acker was all that?.."

"That can be said of many men," interrupted the little angel.."I want to know about Joe Herbert Acker. I want to know about that man."

"It's quite simple." Said the angel, as he hovered and placed the last twinkling star in the sky, and added just the right amount of glow to the moon.

"This man, Joe Herbert Acker, in spite of his body racked with pain from liver cancer, encouraged his family, his friends and all he met to continue to look towards where all hope began and ended. This man Joe Herbert Acker, up until about three weeks before he went into the hospital was still going about running errands for the elderly and anyone he saw that was in need. This man, Joe Herbert Acker, gave as much love back to God, through his giving, as was given him."

The older Angel, pleased with all the work God had given him to do turned and said, "Do you understand now?"

"Yes. I think I see now," said the little angel. "He was favored like Job. And, like Job endured a lot of pain, but he held on. And, through it all, he believed in the power and the promises of the Word....he just kept on loving God anyway. I guess there's no way to describe someone like that without running out of adjectives."

"I know." Said the angel, " Like I said, he was all that and more. Excuse me, but the trumpets have started and God is waiting at Heaven's gate."

Suddenly, something caught the little angels attention. "My, my-- look at the light that's streaking this way. What is that light? Is that Joe Herbert Acker? His light! It's a brighter one than I've ever seen and its so wide. " gushed the little angel.

"Yes, that's him!" the older Angel exclaimed. "That light is the love that Joe Herbert Acker brought with him."

"He brought so much love with him-couldn't he have left just a little for his family?" asked the little angel sadly.

"Oh, he did!" laughed the older angel. He pointed and said, "Don't you see it down there. The light he left now holds his wife, his children and grandchildren, his brother, and his sisters. The glow from it is wrapped around his aunts, his in-laws, and all his relatives. The brightness that surrounds Prospect Baptist church and everyone who knew him in Williamston, SC and everywhere, is his love. As much love as Joe Herbert Acker brought with him to heaven will never equal what he left on earth.

Rest in peace Herbert....you were all that and more....your sister Pat.

A Kept Woman
by Essence Best Selling Author Pat G'Orge-Walker
Reprint August 5, 2009

One exhausting evening, I hurried my eleven-year-old grandson off to bed and eagerly headed into the living room. The living room was my sanctuary for my “me” time. After leaning back in my recliner, putting my feet up and closing my eyes in relief the words, “a Kept Woman,” flashed through my mind. Of course, I sat straight up and thought, “who me?” I thought I had lived pretty much a somewhat chaste life. I never had much of a choice. I was a PK. A preacher’s kid. Both parents were pastors and preachers. My grandmother, according to her, was very intimate with God.

Immediately, I wanted to run and write it down. As an author I was constantly bombarded with attention grabbing titles that I assumed would titillate my readers. That time the title, “A Kept Woman,” was specifically for me.

I sat down, again, in the recliner and thought, “Am I a kept woman? Kept by whom or by what? I never had a rich boyfriend. A Kept Woman. What does it mean?” After letting my mind go back, as far as even my childhood, I was reminded that I most certainly had been, “A Kept Woman.”

At the age of three I was trapped in a fire that raged beyond control. I remembered the scene that day as clearly as if it had just happened. The smoke, the fire, and especially the brave fireman that risked his life coming through the flames to rescue me were still vivid. At the moment the fireman picked me up and held me tightly beneath his coat, God had set in motion my safety net. He had kept me alive.

At the age of fifteen I was assaulted and left for dead in the woods. I somehow managed to drag my bloodied body out to safety. I was not alone. God provided me with a Guardian Angel. Again, He kept me.

Some years later, I was in my car and a huge Mack truck recklessly slammed into the drivers side. The car was totaled and I was seriously injured. I was mangled and had slivers of glass embedded in my skin. According to those in authority, I should not have survived. I did. God kept me and healed me.

When I contacted a viral infection in the base of my brain and almost completely went blind, God kept me and He healed me.

There have been so many instances that God has stepped in and kept me. He has kept me from hurt and dangers. Some seen and not seen. God has kept me from making many mistakes, but most of all, He has kept me to do His will.

When I think back over the past, the present and the future I realize that I am, indeed, A Kept Woman.

I praise and thank God for keeping me. As He has kept me, He can keep you too. We are all here, not by happenstance, but by the will of God. I have a verse that has become my mantra,…”I am a living testimony. I should have been dead and gone, but the Lord let me live on. I am a living testimony. And, I’m glad, glad, glad.

Jude 24: Now unto Him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy…..

A Spiritual Blackout In The Land
by Pat G'Orge-Walker
Reprint August 10, 2009

Early one morning, about a year ago as I sat at my kitchen table mentally organizing my day, something on the television caught my attention. It was the voice of a powerful preacher named Bishop T.D. Jakes. He was speaking about the relationship of a woman with God. He used the example of the woman with an issue of blood who persevered until she was able to touch the hem of Jesus garment. As often as I had heard many preachers speak from that particular text, that day, Bishop Jakes message grabbed me from the soul and outward. The word perseverance took on an entirely new meaning for me.

I began to wonder if some of the other Television Ministries were preaching lessons that would help, not only Christians, but all people through what I termed, a spiritual blackout, throughout the land.

Continuing to surf through, primarily cable television stations, I came across another dynamic speaker. Again, the word perseverance echoed from the mouth of a down-home, telling it like it is speaker. Evangelist Joyce Meyers. She caught my attention because she was putting her personal business out over the airwaves for any and everybody to know. As I continued to listen, I commented, Aint no way I would have told that bit of information. Or something like, Now that would have only come out when God read it from the Judgment Book. Yet, after every personal revelation, she followed with how she had to persevere. And, it was only through perseverance that she got to the place where God needed her to be. She had been knocked down more times than bowling pins.

Now I was hooked. Having grown up primarily in an era when Oral Roberts and Billy Graham ruled the airwaves with their astonishing acts of healing through faith, I sat back and was drawn in by the straight-from-the-hip teachings coming over the airwaves. Everything said was based upon scripture with very little room for error. After Evangelist Joyce Meyers came another young man out of California by the name of Bishop McClendon. His generation-X way of preaching stopped me cold. He had a way about him that belied his youth and emitted a no-nonsense, take-no-prisoner manner. He, too, spoke about perseverance. He used the crippled man that laid by the pool of Bethesda for 38 years for someone to place him in it. This was an example of limited perseverance. True, the man was persistent in his efforts to attain healing, but he limited himself by waiting for someone to do what he should have done for himself.

I soon learned that there were other dynamic preachers on the cable channels that taught the much-needed lessons for today. Bishop G.E. Patterson from Memphis, Tennessee, Pastor John Cherry of Maryland, Bishop Frank Reid of Baltimore, Maryland, the home-spun Pastor Kenneth Copeland, the in-your-face Pastor Rod Parsley and several others. All teaching perseverance to a world that had lost its way to God and was about to give up the journey.

Perseverance means an urgency, a resolve, and a determination to go against all odds to attain your goal. We, as Christians are duty bound and commanded by the Word of God to --- persevere. Or, as my late grandmother would often say, I believe Ill run on---see what the ends gonna be.

When all seems to be for naught, when the majority of the world seems to be represented by the likes of those blatantly displayed on programs such as the Jerry Springer and Ricki Lake shows, we, who believe and aim for a much higher calling in Christ Jesus need only to remember Matthew 10:22?. And you will be hated by all for My names sake, but he who perseveres and endures to the end will be saved.

Remember the Word of God. Hide it in your heart. For as this world plunges deeper and faster into the realms of a Spiritual Blackout, the Word of God will be your only light.

Changing Careers After the Age of Forty
by Pat G'Orge-Walker
Reprint August 16, 2009

Making a sudden career change after the magical age of thirty-nine seemed impossible. I had been in the Entertainment Industry for many years. First, I had been part of a famous R&B girl group called Arlene Smith and the Chantels. We had numerous hits before we slowly faded out and gave way to a new group that took our astonishing harmonies up another notch. A group called the Shirelles. Not one to give up I continued singing with and for other people.

Sometime during my travels on the entertainment highway I was hired to do promotion and marketing for Columbia Records. This change of careers wasn't too hard. I knew a little something about the music business. I knew that in order to survive you needed to bring your own special brand of Vaseline to every meeting, etc. I was determined to be honest and do everything I could to be above reproach in everything I did. Of course, that idea was formed by a very spiritual mind. The record industry is anything but spiritually minded. During my years of promotion and marketing I managed to work at various record companies; hating every moment and praying for the Lord to move me somewhere-anywhere, before I became an unwilling meal on the Corporate Entertainment table. No matter how hard I prayed nothing changed. So I stayed, earned a paycheck and learned my craft.

Finally, in 1997 my big break came. I had gone from promotion and marketing at Columbia Records to being an Executive Producer for one of their albums. They loved the album, spent a lot of money on it and me---then they dropped it! Here I was, forty plus a day. I knew nothing else and depression set in. I couldn't even get arrested at the record company. My career candle had flickered and died because some unknown person had written "dropped" on the album.

It was as if something inside of me died. What could I do? Who could I turn to? I had never stopped praying so that seemed as good a time as any to continue in earnest. I slowly came to realize that I needed to mourn my career. Does that sound foolish? It did to me. Yet, that is exactly what I did. I went though all the emotions of mourning for about a month. After crying and calling the industry a bunch of names that would never grace their letterhead, I received a phone call from Industry veteran publicist and author of the novel "Soul Food", LaJoyce Berkshire. LaJoyce and I had been friends for a few years and what she told me that day was so simple yet it turned my life around. She said, "Gurlfriend, pick yourself up. You ain't exactly without talent. You're always writing stories or something. Publish one of them yourself and see what happens. If for no other reason than to take your mind off of what's happening to you now." And so I did.

In the summer of 1997 I published a short humorous story called, Sister Betty! Gods Calling You! It was only twenty-two pages of the comical efforts of an angel-in-training who after getting into heaven on a technicality had to accept the mission of turning around a hypocritical church. The angel had to start with one of the churchs most elderly and unrelenting hypocrite---Sister Betty. I let several people read it and they always laughed out loud. I had been writing short stories about Sister Betty, Reverend Knott Enuff Money and the other spiritually challenged congregation members of the Aint Nobody Else Right But Us-All Others Goin To Hell Church since 1970. It never once occurred to me that anyone, other than a few people that had seen me perform skits based upon these characters, would care. I released the little book on the Internet. It took off, my career changed and I was all the better for it.

You might ask, what does this have to do with marketing and promotion skills. Well, like I said, I hated every day of having to do promotion and marketing. That did not mean that I did not learn a thing or two. Instead of continuing to mourn what had been I used those skills to launch what was going to be---my career change. Using my marketing and promotion savvy, I not only created a new genre of fiction called, Gospel Comedy, I have also created an International-Interdenominational fan base. Through my books and my humor column I have been blessed to bring to thousands the power of Gods love using humor. I also showed the publishing world that short stories can be appreciated and sold in quantities if marketed and promoted the right way.

So now I can thank the Recording Industry and especially thank God that life truly does exist?after the age of forty and that I can not only laugh about it but share my satirical humor for His purpose. And, if I can do it so can you. Just use those life experiences. Share them. There is a market for you. Above all, put God first and the rest will just naturally progress.

By the way, guess who was one of the first people to call after Sister Betty started making so much noise...that's right---The Recording Industry. I now have video tapes available in addition to the seven book series and I'm my own One Woman show called, what else! Sister Betty! God's Calling You!.

Author Interview with Essence Magazine Bestselling autho Pat G’Orge-Walker
Host: Crystal Adkins INTERVIEWSWITHAUTHORS.BLOGSPOT.COM

CA: What genre(s) do you write?
Answer: Inspirational/Christian Fiction/Gospel comedy

CA: Why do you write the stories that you write?
Answer: A need that is very hard to explain. It’s like a need for water when you really want a soda. Until you drink the water you are unfulfilled.

CA: When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
Answer: From as far back as elementary school there’s been a hunger for words and putting them to paper.

CA: Who or what was your inspiration for writing?
Answer: My father was a lyricist and a poet when he wasn’t preaching. I believe writing is in my DNA. I have other brothers and sisters in the record industry who are song writers, etc. One of my inspirations has always been and continues to be Maya Angelou. She once gave me great advice. She told me to “always be honest in my writing.” I’ve tried to adhere to that in keeping my own voice and authenticity.

CA: When writers block attacks, what do you do to get back on track?
Answer: My stories are primarily character-driven. When having difficulty in discerning their thoughts, dilemmas, etc., I try to find a quiet place. With pen and paper I simply listen to them and take notes. When that process is complete I try to translate what they’ve given. When that doesn’t work I tell everyone in my house to get their own food, laundry and whatever. “The Writing Diva needs her space.” And because I’m the only female in my house I sometimes have to act a fool. The latter usually works best.

CA: What is your work schedule like when you're writing?
Answer: My schedule is extremely hectic. I’m also a performer and I travel around the country. I have a very delicate balancing act. Currently, I’m also taking care of a premature grandbaby… whew! But my husband is so in love with the little one that I have to sometimes ask him can I do something for her ?

CA: Your book is about to be sent into the reader world, what is one word that describes how you feel?
Answer: I’m one of those authors who places her books into the hands of my pastor. Once he and the pulpit pray God’s blessings upon it I let it go. I’m then onto the next book. I know prayer works. This past year I was plagued with the Whooping cough, thyroid problems and couldn’t promote or hardly perform. And but for God, my current novel, Somewhat Saved, entered onto the Essence Best Seller’s List at # 6. It is also nominated for a 2008 AALBS Best comedy award. Last year my novel Cruisin’ On Desperation won.

CA: What do you like to do when you're not writing?
Answer: I like to just relax. I seldom get to do that. I’m a political junky. With this electrifying and historical election in the making I’m glued to the television and Google.

CA: What is something shocking or weird about you that your readers don’t know about?
Answer: I got my passport through the FBI. (true)

CA: How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?
Answer: I’ve written about six books. I can’t say which my favorite book is anymore than I can say which of my children my favorite is.

CA: Do you tend to base your characters on real people or are they totally from your imagination?
Answer: Oh definitely based upon those I know. Ain’t that scary?????

CA: Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
Answer: Other than the obvious which is prayer I would encourage them to study their craft. And if for no other reason than to protect your finances and your career; be careful when selecting an agent. Because I’m in the midst of litigation I won’t say anything further. Take it from me…. Check folks out!!! And then check them out again.

CA: How can a reader contact you or purchase your books?
Answer: I can be reached via email at pat248@aol.com or sisterbetty@sisterbetty.com I’m published by a major publishing house (Kensington/Dafina). My books are sold wherever books are. My websites are: www.myspace.com/sisterbettycomedy and www.sisterbetty.com

CA: Is there anything you would like to add?
Answer: Yes, I would like to add a heartfelt “thank you” for the support of the readers, retail, radio, internet, television and all who’ve had a strong hand in taking me from level to level. I thank God for a husband, despite all his awards and service to this country in fighting terrorism, does all he can to ensure his wife has an opportunity to shine.
