Kendra knows her mother is troubled-what she doesn't understand is why she can't tell her no-until she happens to meet a psychologist, Professor Samuel Hayes. . .

Smart and sexy, Sam offers Kendra the answers-and the love and romance-she's been looking for. She's finally happy-until Ginny turns up for another handout. But this time the situation is desperate, and the stakes are higher than ever. Now, Kendra must finally decide if she's willing to lose everything for a woman who has nothing to give.

Praise for the Novels of Gwynne Forster

"Wise and wonderful as it points out, once again, the importance of honesty and appreciating what you have while you have it."-Publishers Weekly on A Different Kind of Blues

"Touching, thought-provoking, and will make you think twice about ever keeping secrets from the one you love." -Kimberla Lawson Roby, New York Times bestselling author of Secret Obsession

Breaking the Ties That Bind
Excerpt: Chapter One

Kendra Richards completed her ablutions, opened her sleep sofa, extinguished the lights, and crawled into bed. She had stood continually from three o'clock in the afternoon until eleven that night and she'd frozen a smile on her face as she checked coats, briefcases, canes, and umbrellas in a classy Washington, D.C., restaurant. A tally of her tips showed that, as balm for her tired feet, she had exactly sixty-three dollars.

"Oh, well, at least I have a job," she said to herself, fluffed her pillow, let out a long, happy breath, and prepared to sleep. Tomorrow, she would have lunch with her three buddies—The Pace Setters, as the four called themselves—a treat to which she always looked forward.

She heard the phone ringing, but she put her head beneath the pillow and willed the noise to go away. But it persisted, so she sat up and answered it. "Hello, whoever you are at half past midnight."

"What on earth took you so long? Don't tell me you were asleep."

She got comfortable and rested her right elbow on her knee. "What's the matter, Mama?"

"Nothing's the matter. Why does something have to be the matter?"

"Mama, it's almost one o'clock in the morning. I got off a little over an hour ago, and I was just going to sleep. Why'd you call so late?"

"Oh, for goodness' sake. You're the only person in this town who thinks twelve o'clock is late."

Ready to throw up her hands, she said, "Yeah. Right," beneath her breath. Nobody had to tell her that Ginny Hunter was about to drop a bomb. Kendra cut to the chase. "What is it, Mama?"

"Don't be so frosty. Your mama needs a couple 'a thousand. I saw a nice little Lexus, and I need that money for the down payment."

Kendra stared at the receiver as if it were the phone that abused her patience. "You're not serious. You risked waking me up for this? And why would you buy a car? Your license has been revoked, and you can't drive it. Besides, you can't get car insurance if your license has been revoked, and it's against the law to drive an uninsured car."

"Oh, that's stupid. Nobody can get around in Washington without a car."

"Mama, I'm tired. Can we talk about this tomorrow? I'll call you."

"I don't want a phone call. I want the money. Getting anything out of you is like squeezing blood out of a turnip."

"That's hardly fair, Mama. For twelve years, I've been trying to save enough money to go back to Howard and complete the requirements for my bachelor's degree. And for twelve years, every time I get one or two thousand dollars in the bank, you borrow it, and you never pay it back. To make it worse, every year the cost of college is higher.

"I have two thousand dollars, but I saved it for my tuition. I hope you remember that you borrowed twenty-seven hundred dollars from me about six weeks ago and promised to pay it back in two weeks. You're acting as if you don't owe me a thing, Mama. So please don't say I'm stingy. I'll call you in the morning and let you know."

Kendra hung up wondering, not for the first time, about her mother's spending habits. Hopefully, she didn't gamble or use illegal drugs. Kendra slept fitfully and awakened as tired as she'd been when she went to bed.

Ginny Hunter figured she'd done her duty when she gave birth to Kendra. She hadn't wanted any children, but Bert Richards, Kendra's father, threatened to hold her criminally liable if she had an abortion. She did her best to be a mother to Kendra after her own mother passed on and left the child rearing to her. She'd hated every minute of it, but she'd done her best, and it shouldn't be much of a stretch for Kendra to help her out when she needed money.

Ginny sucked in her breath. School. Always school. If Kendra would find herself a man with some money, she wouldn't have to work till nearly midnight. Damned if she'd do it. Ginny rolled out of bed, slipped her feet into her pink, spike-heel mules, and threw on her pink negligee. She glanced back at the long, brown male frame on the other side of the bed and frowned. Why didn't men realize that the sunrise shouldn't catch them in a woman's bed, unless the woman was their wife? She did not cook breakfast for any man.

She went around and whacked the man on his behind. "Get up, uh, Ed. It's time to go home."

He sat up, rubbed his eyes, and gave her a smile that was obviously intended to captivate her. She stared at him. "Listen, honey. What's gorgeous at night doesn't look so good in daylight. I got to get out of here and go to work."

"Don't I get some breakfast?"

"Baby, I don't even cook for me."

He got up, pulled on his shorts, and looked around for the rest of his clothes. "I can see why you're not married," he grumbled.

"No you don't. I just divorced my fifth husband, though the decree's not yet final. When a relationship starts to sag, I say bye bye baby."

"Don't you try to work it out?"

"What for? It'll sag again, and the second time it's practically unbearable. I don't pretend. If it ain't working, it ain't working."

Ed buttoned his shirt, pulled on his pants, narrowed his eyes, and shook his head. "I've never met a woman like you, lady. You're a piece of work. Be seeing you."

The door slammed. She went over to the night table beside her bed, looked in the drawer, moved the lamp and the phone. Son-of-a-bitch hadn't left her a penny. Her anger slowly cooled when she remembered that he wasn't a john, just a guy she'd wanted. Young and virile. It had surprised her that she'd gotten him so easily. She laughed aloud. The guy wasn't a player, only lonely and terribly naive. But the brother could certainly put it down! She didn't turn tricks, but she expected a guy to be generous if he had a nice time with her.

She answered the telephone, thinking the caller would be Kendra. "Good morning. Lovely day, isn't it?"

"This is Phil. I'd like to know what makes you so happy. You coming in today? If not, one of my other operators will take your all-day spa customer."

"Let her have it. I've just decided not to come in till tomorrow." She gave manicures, pedicures, and massages when she needed money, but she had no intention of working five full days a week every week. No indeed! "My head hurts."

"Okay." He hung up.

Ginny showered, changed the bed linens, made coffee, and waited for Kendra's call.

Ginny would have awhile to wait, however, for at that time, Kendra sat at her tiny kitchen table going over her financial affairs. She tried always to have as much money in her savings as she had debts, her reasoning being that, if she lost her job, she could still pay what she owed. From her childhood days of shuttling from her grandmother to her father and sometimes to her mother, she counted nothing as certain. She drained her coffee cup, sat back, and considered what she was about to do.

At times, her resentment of her mother nearly overwhelmed her, and it also gave her an enormous burden of guilt. But shouldn't she discharge her obligations to herself? She had two thousand and eight hundred dollars in the bank. If she could save all of her tips—an average of twelve hundred dollars a month—for the next six months, till the first of October—that plus what she had in savings, along with whatever part-time work she could find, would get her through school. After the first semester, she would apply for a scholarship, and she knew that as a straight-A student, she'd get one.

She went to the phone to call and ask her mother what she had done with the twenty-seven hundred dollars she'd borrowed six weeks earlier, which she'd claimed she needed to move to a better and safer neighborhood. She hadn't moved. However, before she could dial Ginny's number, the phone rang. She looked at the caller ID.

"Hi, Papa. How are you?"

"I'm fine. What about you? I just got in some nice spring lamb from New Zealand. I can bone you a couple of roasts and a few racks, wrap them up, and all you have to do is put them in your freezer. When can you come by for them?"

"My goodness, Papa, that's wonderful. I have to be at work a few minutes before eleven today. Put it in your freezer, and I can pick it up Thursday evening when you're open late. I always get the best meat in town," she said with pride.

"That's because your papa's the best butcher in town. When are you moving to your new apartment?"

"I'm off Sunday and Monday, and I thought I'd pack Sunday and move on Monday. I'm so excited! I'll have a real bedroom separate from my living room."

"And it's yours. Don't let Ginny get her hands on that coop. She'll destroy it. You hear me? Your mother thinks money grows on trees. Don't let her stay with you, and don't let her get her hands on that deed."

"I won't, Papa. She called me after midnight last night asking for two thousand dollars to put down on a Lexus."

"What?" he roared. "Don't you dare! I buy you an apartment to get you out of that neighborhood, and you give your mother thousands of dollars in the course of a year. Don't you dare. You said you're trying to finish college, and I'm trying to help you."

"I told her I'd call her and let her know. Papa, do you think she gambles or that she's using drugs?"

"Ginny? Never! She's foolishly self-indulgent. I've known her to be on the way to the dentist with a bad toothache, see something in a store window that she liked, and buy it, knowing that she wouldn't have enough money left to pay the dentist. She told the dentist a lie, and he sent me the bill. Back when I was hardly making two-fifty a week, she'd spend the grocery money on cosmetics for herself, or treat herself to a fancy lunch at an expensive restaurant. She's not mean, Kendra. She just thinks of herself and nobody else."

Kendra thought about her conversation with her father for a long time after she hung up. She'd said she'd call her, so she dialed her mother's number. "Hi, Mama. I don't think I can lend you that money. I need it. What did you do with the twenty-seven hundred dollars? You haven't moved."

"I used it for something else. Twenty-seven hundred dollars is not a lot of money. I really need that two thousand. You're always complaining that I should work full time, but how can I? Public transportation in this town stinks. Yesterday, I stood up on the bus at rush hour from Georgetown to Fifth and P. I need a car."

"But Mama, what you're about to do is illegal."

"You let me worry about that."

"I don't know, Mama. Every time I lend you money, I'm shooting myself in the foot."

"If I don't get it from you, I'll get it, legally or otherwise. I want that Lexus."

What could she do illegally that would net her that much money? Kendra wondered. However, knowing her mother, she wasn't prepared to doubt her. "All right. I can let you have a thousand and five hundred."

"What about the rest?"

"I'm moving this weekend, and I need it."

"Well, if that's all you're willing to spring for, beggars can't be choosers."

"When will you give it back to me?"

"Soon as I can. I'll come by and get it."

"Never mind. I'll drop it by your place tomorrow morning." She hung up and kicked the edge of her sofa with such force that she hurt the toe of her right foot.

She looked toward the heavens. "Why can't I say no to that woman? She's using me, and she doesn't care how much she hurts me." She poured half a cup of Epsom salts into the bathtub, ran some hot water, and sat down to soak her bruised toe. An hour later, wearing Reeboks for comfort, she headed to work.

About Gwynne Forster
Gwynne Forster
was born in North Carolina, grew up in Washington, D.C., and has lived, studied and worked in New York City ever since she came of voting age. She considers herself a humanitarian, a perspective that she inherited from her mother, a high school principal, and which she also attributes to her work and education in the social sciences, more specifically, demography. Her fiction writing reflects her training in the sociology of the family and her understanding of inter-personal relations. It should not be surprising then, that quite a few of Gwynne's novels and novellas are set within the context of the family.

Gwynne relaxes best when she is near—but not in—the water. She loves boating and would spend hours fishing daily if she could. Oddly, she never learned to swim, and she always wears a lifejacket when boating or fishing. Her bedroom faces a river, and if she didn't work, she would spend a lot of time sitting in the bedroom gazing at the water and the passing boats. Moving water, she thinks, is soothing and relieves stress.

Gwynne Forster is national best-selling and award-winning author of eight novels of general fiction, forty-five romance novels, and six novellas. All of her mainstream novels and several of her romance novels have been featured in Black Expressions Magazine.

Among her many awards and forms of recognition, Gwynne is most proud of her election in 2006 to the Affaire de Coeur Magazine Hall Of Fame, the Lifetime Achievement Award given her by Romantic Times Magazine in 2007, and her selection by Harlequin to participate in its Warm Hands, Warm Hearts project with the St. June Children's Research Hospital..

Fiction writing is Gwynne Forster’s second career. She holds bachelors and masters degrees in sociology, a master’s degree in economics/demography and has additional graduate credits in journalism. As a demographer, she is widely published. She is formerly chief of (non-medical) research in fertility and family planning in the Population Division of the United Nations in New York and served for four years as chairperson of the International Programme Committee of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (London, England). These positions took her on official business to sixty-three developed and developing countries. Gwynne sings on her church choir, loves to entertain, and is a museum hopper, gourmet cook and avid gardener. She enjoys classical music, opera, jazz and blues with her husband with whom she lives in New York City.

The Stalker Chronicles
By Electa Rome Parks

Pilar is back, and this time it's all about revenge.

Tall, dark, and handsome bestselling male author Xavier Preston thought his nightmare—in the form of Pilar, a fanatical stalker/fan—had finally ended. Little does he know it’s only beginning.

When Xavier met Pilar, he got much more than he bargained for. What started out as an erotic one-night stand quickly turned into a dangerous game of obsession and pain, with both parties playing to win. Then she simply disappeared.

Stunning Pilar hasn't gone away, though. In fact, she has been very near, watching his every move and patiently waiting for him to realize they were meant to be together forever. She still believes they’re soul mates, and the only option for her is “Until death do us part.” If she can't have Xavier, then no one can. Now no one is safe—not his friends, and definitely not him.
Revenge can be a real killer...

The Stalker Chronicles by Electa Rome Parks

Prologue

It was getting easier and easier now.

She moved quickly and efficiently throughout the spacious three-car garage. She wanted to remove any traces of evidence that she had ever been there. She had always been good at simply disappearing and being invisible. That was easy.

She was definitely more confident, and it showed in her cool, calm, and collected demeanor. She was no longer afraid of being caught, because the urge to punish those who had hurt her was stronger, much more overwhelming, and urgent. She probably couldn’t stop herself even if she wanted to---she was operating on pure animal instinct. The need to survive and protect herself by any means necessary overrode anything else. Fight or flight. And she had long been tired of running.

There had been others over the years, more than she could count on one hand. They were mere vague gray memories that occasionally crossed her mind, like one might think of a stray pet one owned as a child, but she dismissed the images just as quickly. She never held on to them for more than a few fleeting moments in time. Denial was her refuge.

Only one had successfully escaped her sharp talons and womanly wiles. Or had he? Maybe she let him get away, just that one time. She hadn’t determined which. Sometimes she thought of him, when her mind wasn’t a jumble of darkness, discontent, and madness. There were moments. . . .

She missed him, yearned for his special touch, the touch that only he could deliver with precision and skill. His touch brought heat and desire. His lies brought pain and sorrow. She hated that he escaped her grasp, or that possibly she let him walk away, unscathed. She still considered him her soul mate, the one who made her complete and safe and sound. She yearned to feel complete, because most days she realized she was broken and damaged beyond repair. However, she couldn’t think of that one just yet. Not now. That would come later. The strenuous act of positioning this one just right was over. Now she had serious, delicate cleanup work to complete. Within seconds, that one, the one who got away, was pushed to the dark, cold recesses of her mind. Forgotten . . . for now.

It was painstakingly slow work because everything had to be absolutely perfect. She had observed and respected what a perfectionist he was. He thrived on it. She softly snickered to herself and had to catch herself before it became an all-out rambunctious laugh. He didn’t look too perfect right now, slumped behind the steering wheel of his black BMW like a deflated, tossed-aside bag of rags and bones. Another snicker escaped. She tightly clamped her gloved hand down over her mouth to stop it, to keep it from spilling forth.

When he was discovered—hopefully, within a day or two—she wanted him to appear perfect in death. That was the least she could do, because she honestly felt she owed him that much. With a gloved hand, she carefully took the typewritten note out of his jacket pocket, typed from the personal computer in his home office, and gently placed it next to him on the soft leather passenger seat of his car. Laughter escaped freely and drifted into the still air.

She took one last hopeful look at him and placed a single kiss on his left cheek. She wanted to remember him at peace. Happy. So handsome. She sighed before she carefully closed the driver’s side car door. Then she continued to wipe down any surface she might have touched that bore her prints. She was patient as perspiration dotted her forehead. From her experiences, she knew that patience was a virtue.

She dreamily thought, We could have been so deliriously happy together. They always fucked things up. Always. She hadn’t met a man yet who didn’t. It was never a matter of if, but when. If only he hadn’t started to question or doubt her because of that damn movie, Diary of a Stalker, which had been released a month earlier and was a blockbuster success. Everyone was talking about it; already there was talk of Oscar nominations for best actress and best actor. She couldn’t escape it, no matter where she turned or what it signified for her.

No, you didn’t reject me and attempt to walk away, without a backward glance, she thought. How dare he? She didn’t do well with rejection. Never had. Never would. She chuckled to herself, thinking the joke was definitely on him. If he were alive, he would probably appreciate the joke as well. She had decided years ago that no one, especially not a man, would ever hurt her again. Never again. So far, she hadn’t broken her promise to herself, nor did she have any intentions to going forward.

She exited the beautiful, spacious home that screamed quiet elegance, luxury, and money. She let herself out and quietly disappeared into the night, under the cover of darkness. She craved the darkness for its mystery and power. She whistled a happy tune to herself as she walked away. No worries. No rush. She was lost in her own demented world. Enter at your own risk.

She reminisced about a man—a beautiful, tall, dark, and very sexy man with deep dimples and gorgeous teeth, a man she couldn’t wait to be reunited with. Her body craved him, and she could hardly contain her excitement and joy at just the mere thought of being in his presence again. It had been too long. As for the one in the garage, with the car engine running and the towel stuffed in the exhaust system, he had already slipped her mind, before his body was even cold and stiff. Her last thoughts of him were that when they found him, she hoped he would look perfect. She knew he would want it that way. After all, that was the least she could do. She hummed a lively tune and strolled off into the darkness.

Special Forces

Major Tyson Bradford was deploying in seven days and had no one to care for his 80-year-old aunt. Lynay Grant’s son was desperately ill. The two entered into a marriage of convenience to meet their needs. Everyone got what they wanted, right? Wrong. Allison, Tyson’s ex-wife refused to accept not only their divorce of three years, but Tyson’s re-marriage as well.   An uncommon path of destruction pummeled Tyson and Lynay. But to a woman scorned, the breakdown of the faux marriage was simply gravy. She intended to teach him a lesson. Her ultimate vengeance— his total ruin.

Book Review by NicholeLove
I never thought I would write a review but sometimes you have to give a True Shout Out on a really GOOD BOOK! I LOVE THIS BOOK! I’ve read it 3 times and it is one of my favorite IR romance books.

The characters are very well developed. And I love the way they developed their relationship before they have sex which to me built to a very steamy sexual encounter!   Great conflict with the ex-wife (boy was she crazy) and I love the way our hero made up for disrespecting his wife. I would like a story about the sister and how she became friends with the main character other than that this is truly a great IR book! My only other wish: please make this into a movie!

Special Forces - Chapter Excerpt:

Anne had never offered to introduce him to anyone before. It wouldn't hurt to talk to the woman; necessity demanded he leave no possibility unchecked. He picked up the paper that he'd written her information and called.

"Hello...this is Tyson Bradford. Is this Lynay?" He sat on the edge of his sofa. He loved and trusted his sister, but this was his life, his home and his aunt he would hand over to this person. They needed to talk unfiltered.

"Yes, this is Lynay. Who's this?"

Nice voice, he thought. Warm, soft, and easy on the ears. "Tyson, Tyson Bradford. I believe you spoke to my sister Anne earlier." He picked up his drink and took a sip as he waited for her response.

"Oh yes. How are you?"

His brow rose at the sincerity of her greeting. He looked at his cell, and then placed it back to his ear. "I'm fine. What about you?"

"Okay, a little tired, but overall I'm good, thanks."

"Glad to hear it. Listen, Anne tells me she thinks we should get married so your son could get better medical care, you can finish college, I can have someone to watch my home and stay with my aunt. Is that what she told you?" He intended to get them on the same page as soon as possible. Time had dwindled too far to play around the situation.

"Yeah." She laughed. A nice warm sound. "That about covers it. Sounds wild doesn't it?"

"Well, in reality it sounds like Anne. However, the truth of the matter is I am in an actual bind. I have orders to leave and I haven't had any success finding someone to help with my aunt." Or anyone she'll stay with. "My sister seems to think you wouldn't be interested in being a caretaker for my home and aunt without the dependent benefits. Is that right?"

He reclined in the sofa to see if he could negotiate a deal. So far, he liked what he heard. She hadn't been rattled with his direct approach, sending his opinion of her sky high. On the other hand, she and Anne were close. And very little rattled his sister.

"Yeah, the medical benefits are the pivotal point. Is there another way my son could get better medical treatments without the dependent benefits?" Her voice sounded hopeful.

He relaxed. Knowing she wanted other options as well made the deal more palatable. "Not that I'm aware of. Everywhere I checked his pre-existing conditions would lock him out for a while." He made decent money as an Officer, but he didn't intend to bankroll a sick child. Who knew how expensive that would become? He'd checked every angle online, and through his contacts on base. The medical care from the military would definitely be the best deal for her son.

"Well, I'm settled here, it's not the best, but his doctor is familiar with his case and there aren't any delays. Medicaid only does so much," she said.

"I hear you. Anne said your son has severe asthma is that right?" He wanted to hear her talk. Her voice had a melodic quality that slid over him, calming while making him hunger for more. Maybe this wouldn't be so bad after all.

"Yeah, he has bad attacks. I'm praying that the doctors are right and he out grows it. But in the meanwhile it's probably harder on me than him, if that's possible." Her voice grew softer, and he strained to hear the tail end.

"How old is he?" He placed his foot on the coffee table. He didn't think he would, but he found himself enjoying this talk with her, a first for him. Usually, he said a few necessary words and ended most conversations posthaste.

He's four and kinda small, but growing stronger every day." Her pride was evident.
As far as he was concerned, the little boy sealed the deal. He knew his aunt would move from the farm to be around the child.

Selfish? Yes.

But the two of them would be entering into this without blinders. She'd get what she wanted and so would he. "Lynay, I have to be honest. I can't do a straight-up contract marriage. It's offensive to me on principle. If we do this thing, it has to be a real marriage until we dissolve it."

"What do you mean a real marriage?"

He liked that. No hysteria, straight forward, just wanting clarity. "First off, you'd have my name. That means you'd represent me. So there would be no dating other men or outside sexual activity. If that is a problem, we can end the conversation here. And I'll apologize for wasting your time." His tone was adamant. There was no give on this.

by Cheris Hodges

Her Fantasy And His Reality. . .

Classically trained actress Imani Gilliam is gifted, beautiful—and broke. Facing eviction, her only hope of staying afloat is to do the reality TV show, "Let's Get Married. " The show pairs up single strangers, and viewers vote for who should be united in wedded bliss. Imani is only looking to be united with a paycheck—until she locks eyes with a fellow contestant. . .

Are About To Create A Buzz. . .

Dr. Raymond Thomas is determined to keep his struggling free clinic running—even if it means appearing on "Let's Get Married. " He can't imagine finding love on TV—but when he spots Imani, he definitely finds lust. And their attraction isn't lost on the producers. But as the cameras start focusing on them, Raymond wonders if he's just a tool in Imani's career. Only time—and a life-changing choice—will tell. . .

Excerpt from Too HOT For TV
Chapter One

If looks could kill, Edward Funderburke would have been dead under Imani Gilliam's icy stare. Her agent must have been losing his mind along with his silver hair for suggesting such a thing. A reality TV show?  Imani was a serious actress, not someone seeking fifteen minutes of fame, like those people who signed up for those shows. Obviously, Edward must have forgotten that. Imani was Broadway, feature films—not reality TV. Instead of getting her a part in a cheap reality show, he should have worked harder to get her the role in the reprisal of the hit play Kiss of the Spider Woman. According to Edward, the producers were looking for someone with more of a recognizable name, even though she had wowed them at her audition. But how did anyone think Imani would become a bankable name if she couldn't get a big role that would make her a star?

What Imani lacked in name recognition, she made up for in talent. She was the classic triple threat—she could sing, dance, and act. That should have been enough, or at least that's what Imani thought. But in this industry, sometimes it didn't matter how talented you were, which was why so many rappers and singers had lead roles in so many movies, yet only a few of them were actually good enough to pull it off.

She'd do a film with Common, but he was the only rapper who she felt deserved the screen time he received. The rest of them needed to stick to their day jobs and studios needed to put their faith in actresses and actors—people who trained to do the job.

Imani wasn't naive enough to think that the studios weren't in it for the money. That's why 50 Cent and T.I. starred alongside Denzel and Samuel L. Jackson. And if it wasn't the rappers, it was the stars who stayed in the tabloids who got all of the plum roles. Imani would've loved the chance to play the lead in Salt. Of course, she didn't have the name recognition of Angelina Jolie or the headlines.

Folding her arms, she glared at Edward, letting him know that she wasn't warming to the idea of doing a reality show.

"It's a really good concept, and think of the national exposure," Edward added, hoping to open Imani's mind to the notion.

"Eddie, I know you don't really expect me to say yes. I'm a real actress," Imani said indignantly, flipping her curly locks behind her ear. "These shows are for has-beens or wannabes. Maybe if you would get out of the office more often, you'd find a script for me that would give me the name recognition that I so badly need."

"All right, Imani," he said, leaning across his desk and looking her directly in the eye. "Let's be real here. You haven't worked in months, no one has sent you a script since you did Fearless Diva and, need I remind you, that wasn't the best vehicle that you could have taken. Monster's Ball could have been your breakthrough role. Halle won the Oscar for that role. You would've been great in that role and I tried to tell you that. You just think that you can do anything you want to do and you can't. It's about building a career, a portfolio that people identify you with. Those regional plays you've done, most of them have been for free and no one, not a soul, is trying to put them on Broadway. You have to do something to shake the stagnant off your career."

Imani rolled her eyes. "I didn't want to do a drama. I had just come off a dramatic role on Broadway and I needed a break," she said. "And if you gave me better advice, then maybe I would listen. You weren't too happy about the Monster's Ball role either; now all of a sudden it was the best thing that I ever passed up?" She folded her arms underneath her breasts and pouted.

Unfazed by her temper tantrum, Edward leaned back and propped his feet up on the desk. "You gambled and we lost. Now, Imani, I like you and I believe in your talent, but you're not one of my most profitable clients. If either of us has a plan to make any money, we have to get you out there and make your name stand out in a crowd. This is a start. I don't want to have to drop you, but you've got to do something. This show can build your image. Look at how famous lots of people who have no acting ability have gotten—all from the exposure of reality TV. We can turn that fame into big movie roles and those Broadway shows that you want."

Imani chewed on the end of her sculptured nail, pondering what he'd said to her. It had been hard for her to get signed by a reputable agent. Before meeting Edward, she'd been scammed by so-called talent agents who wanted to put her in B-list movies and soft-core pornography films.

At least Edward had done his best to get her roles in blockbuster movies and hit stage productions, even if she didn't agree with him at the moment. He'd steered her away from the typical chitlin' circuit plays that young actresses found themselves acting in and from becoming typecast as a neck-rolling, finger-wagging stereotype.

But now, he and Imani were desperate.

"Eddie, I'm trying, but these reality shows are just so beneath me, and the images that they portray are not the best. Sometimes the women on these shows are just dumb looking, slutty, or bitchy. I'm none of the above."

"It pays fifteen thousand dollars up front. It's only ten weeks and you might even get voted off before the show is over. The concept is simple. You get teamed up with a bachelor, do some physical challenges, and America votes to see if you and your partner should get married. Just make a splash and watch the scripts and offers come rolling in."

"No," she said, and then stood up. "I'd rather starve." Imani turned to her left, ready to walk out the door.

"Aren't you doing that already?" Edward called out.

Imani slammed the office door behind her. The gall, she thought as she headed for the subway terminal. She wanted to take a cab, but with only three dollars in her pocket and a box of raisins for dinner in her apartment, a taxi trip was a luxury that she couldn't afford. Besides, a taxi trip from Manhattan to Brooklyn would wipe out her savings in the bank—if you could call it a savings account. She barely had a hundred dollars in her checking and savings accounts combined. Calling her parents for a loan was out because the first thing her mother, Dorothy, would say is that she needed a real job and acting was a dream she needed to give up. Her father, Horace, would tell her that it was time for her to join the family business of home restorations.

She could be in charge of the interior design aspect of it, even live in a historic home in beautiful Savannah, Georgia. Imani wanted no part of it. Her dream was to act, sing, or dance. Her career of choice was considered an insignificant pipe dream by her family. She'd graduated with a degree from the Juilliard School and hadn't asked her parents for a penny, despite the fact that she went into major debt paying for the expensive performing arts college.

Frowning as she headed to the subway entrance, Imani tried to figure out how she was going to take a free trip on the subway because she wasn't sure if she had the money to make it home. When she saw three New York City Transit officers arresting a group of teenagers who were also trying to get a free ride home, she knew she'd have to walk. She was only about two miles from her place in Fulton Ferry and she could use the exercise. Besides, the walk would give her a chance to think about the reality show.

"I'm not doing it," she mumbled to herself. By the time she had walked five blocks, her feet were throbbing like a heartbeat. "Maybe I should do it. The Apprentice made Omarosa a star and she's not even an actress. But then she did that stupid dating show on TV One," Imani said to no one in particular as she unsnapped her Steve Madden sandals, took them off, and flung them over her shoulder. "But," she continued musing to herself, "I trained at Juilliard. I shouldn't be subjected to this."

Imani was half a block away from her home when she decided that she wasn't going to go on the reality show. She held her head high and walked up to the door of her building, ready to prop her feet up and relax with her Variety magazine. Before she could put the key in the lock, reality sucker-punched her in the stomach. A pink note with big red letters was tacked to her door. "Eviction," it read. Imani snatched the note off the door. She pulled her cell phone out of her tote bag, pressed speed dial number three, and waited for Edward to answer.

"Funderburke and Associates, Edward speaking," he said.

"It's Imani. I've done some thinking," she said as she read the eviction notice for a second time. "I'll do the stupid show."

"Well, don't sound so excited about it," he replied. "What made you change your mind?"

Imani made a mental note of the thirty-day deadline she'd been given to come up with the back rent. Then she balled up the notice. "Let's just say I know this is what I need to do right now."

Storming into her place, Imani decided to watch a little television to take her mind off her current situation. But that was the wrong thing to do. As she flipped through the channels, lamenting her career, she stopped on a sitcom that she'd auditioned for.

"LisaRaye is not a better actress than I am," she exclaimed as she came across a rerun of All of Us, and then flipped the channel.

Next she landed on a Lifetime movie about an abused wife who'd killed her husband. As she watched the unknown actress overdramatize her lines, Imani knew that she would have done so much better in the role, had it been offered to her. She remembered that she'd once told Edward that the last thing she wanted to do was a Lifetime movie. Now, she wished that she'd never made such a crazy statement.

Then she came across her movie on the FX channel. Fearless Diva was a bomb, but it wasn't J. Lo in Gigli or Halle's Catwoman. If she was honest, she'd admit that it was worse. But she wasn't practicing honesty right now.

That role should have led to something, she thought as she watched herself prance across the screen in a skintight leather catsuit. At least my clothes were fierce. Twirling a lock of hair around her finger, Imani critiqued her performance. She was pretty awful in the movie, but it wasn't her fault. The script was horrible and the cameraman, who also called himself the director, didn't know how to operate the camera because every scene looked as if the wind had gotten hold of the equipment.

Maybe Imani did deserve those Razzie award nominations she'd gotten. But someone had to see her potential, didn't they? As tears welled up in her eyes, Imani wondered if her family had been right about her career. Were they right to have no faith in her? Was she chasing a pipe dream that had no chance of coming true?

The phone wouldn't stop ringing at the Palmer Free Clinic in Harlem. And that was the least of their worries. The receptionist had left for lunch three hours ago and never returned. That left Dr. Raymond Thomas juggling answering calls with seeing patients, writing down appointments, and taking messages. What he didn't have time for was a game-playing prankster. "Look," Raymond said, a frown darkening his handsome face, "this is a place of business. No one here has time to play with a lowlife small-timer like you."

"Sir, this isn't a joke. I'm Elize Harrington, a producer with the WAPC Network. You're a candidate for our new reality show, Let's Get Married. Your name was submitted to us and we reviewed your qualifications and we want you on the show," she said, her voice in a near plea.

"Ms. Harrington, who put you up to this joke?" Raymond dropped his pen on the desk and held his finger up to the patient in front of him waiting for her prescription.

The woman sighed. "Again, sir, this isn't a joke. Our show is going to air later this year, but the ten weeks of filming starts in a few weeks. We just need you to come in and take a screen test and sign a waiver."

A rush of people were vying for Raymond's attention. All at once, he had a patient trying to make a follow-up appointment, a nurse questioning him about his orders for a different patient, and the same woman who'd been waiting for ten minutes still wanting her prescription. As Raymond's head began throbbing, he silently wished he could write himself a doctor's note and go home.

He mumbled yes to the producer, told her to call his cell phone, leave the details about the show on his voice mail, and he would call her back. Raymond hung up the phone and, putting his composed doctor face back on, turned to his patient. When things calmed down, Raymond was going to get to the bottom of this reality TV show mess. It was already pushed to the back burner.

"Mrs. Wentworth," he said, taking the elderly woman's hand, "can you come back in two weeks?"

The caramel-colored woman smiled at him. "I can do that and my grandbaby, Emma, can bring me. She's real pretty and she can cook, too. Our family is originally from the south and southern women know how to do one thing better than anyone else does, and that's cook. Dr. Thomas, you don't get many home-cooked meals, do you? You're not married, are you?"

"No, ma'am," he replied with a smile, even though he wanted to push her out the door. If Raymond had a penny for every elderly woman who wanted to fix him up with her granddaughter, niece, or daughter, he would be rich enough to fund the clinic himself.

Mrs. Wentworth shook her head. "That's a shame. You need a good woman to take care of you. You're way too skinny. I like a man with a little more meat on his bones, but my grandbaby would love you."

Nurse Karen DeSalis dropped a chart in front of Raymond. "Mrs. Wentworth, I've been telling him that for years, but he doesn't listen."

Raymond rolled his eyes. Who had time for love or romance? He and his fraternity brother, Keith Jacobs, had opened the Marion Palmer Free Clinic, named for their favorite first-grade teacher, three years ago in Harlem. They'd gone to Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia, together and did their residency at Grady Memorial Hospital. When their residency was over, the native New Yorkers returned to Harlem ready to make a difference. Luckily for them, they had help. Keith and Raymond received a three-million-dollar grant from the Harlem Revitalization Group to buy equipment. The city donated the building and donations from businesses helped the men with the first year's operating costs. Then September 11 happened and everything changed. As donations began to dry up, Keith and Raymond poured their savings into the clinic. They could barely pay the staff, which was why they were on their fourth receptionist in a month.

"Karen, have you seen Keith?" Raymond asked as Mrs. Wentworth walked out the door.

"He's eating lunch in the doctor's lounge," she replied. "But what about these orders?" She placed her hand on his sculpted arm, preventing him from leaving the front desk.

Raymond picked up the chart. "Discharge Loretta, give her meds for the pain, and have her come back in a month. What's the question?"

"Sorry, doc, I'm not fluent in chicken scratch."

Raymond playfully sneered at her and then broke out laughing. "Watch the door and phones for me. Five minutes, okay?" She nodded, and then Raymond took off for the doctor's lounge, which was more like a storage closet with a dingy window.

Keith was sitting at the small table, more akin to a TV tray, eating a salad and a roast chicken sandwich. "What's up, Ray?" Keith asked, catching his partner's stare.

"You tell me, brother."

Keith stood up, stuffing the last of his sandwich in his mouth. "The only time you call me 'brother' is when you're pissed off. What did I do now?"

Raymond raised his eyebrow. "You're going to stand here and pretend that you don't know what you did? I got a call that I'm sure you know all about. Some TV producer called me about the show Let's Get Married."

"Finally! I'm glad they got to my letter," Keith said excitedly. "I thought all of my writing had been in vain."

Raymond was tempted to grab his best friend by the throat and choke him like a chicken ready to be plucked and fried.

"Keith, have you lost your mind? First of all, I don't want to get married, and second of all, I'm not reality TV material."

"Think about it Ray. This show guarantees people will hear of the Marion G. Palmer Free Clinic over and over again. And I'm sure the ladies will swoon over tall, muscular Dr. Ray-Ray, just like they did in college. We can't pay for this kind of publicity. It's not as if we can afford it anyway. Bro, we're in trouble. At this point, we need to do anything to keep these doors open."

Raymond shook his head. "Why don't you go on the show?" he snapped.

“Miss Rodgers?”

There was a cop standing at her door. Charlotte eyed him wearily through the screen. “Yes?”

“Miss Rodgers, your daughter, Clarice Braxton? Called the station saying that she hadn’t heard from you and was worried. She asked us to check on you.”

Charlotte didn’t say a word.

“Are you alright, ma’am?” he eventually asked.

“I’m fine,” she said tersely.

The officer didn’t look convinced. “Are you sure?”

No, she wasn’t sure. Her children had turned on her and left her here all alone. How in the world could she be alright after her children had dismissed her the way the three of them had done?

“I’m fine,” she said, more convincingly.

He shook his head. “Call your children, ma’am,” he said, annoyed, before leaving. “They’re obviously worried about you.”

Charlotte slammed the door shut, sat down in her recliner, put her feet up, and stared at the television screen. The volume was turned down so low she could barely hear it. That was how she preferred it. After Camille, her youngest daughter, had moved out and left with Connie and Reesy, that house had felt like a tomb, cold, empty, and too quiet. Always quiet. Charlotte had learned to live with it, and to wallow in it as a reminder to herself that nobody gave a damn about her. They never did.

Less than ten minutes after that cop had left her front porch, the phone rang.

“Mom?” It was Clarice. “Mom, it’s me, Reesy. I know you’re there. The policeman said he saw you.” She sighed, irritably. “Mom, please. Don’t be like this. We’re worried about you. You haven’t spoken to me or Cammy since we left. You’re being silly.”

Silly? Charlotte was being silly? She angrily snatched up the receiver. “I’m being silly,” she huffed. “Silly is putting your nose in where it doesn’t belong, Reesy! Silly is making somebody believe with all their heart that you care about them when deep down, you know it’s not true!”

“Mom…”

“Silly is beating on your own mother, Clarice!” she said, letting go of bitter tears. “You’re never supposed to hit your mother! God saves a special place in hell for children who beat their mothers!”

“I didn’t beat you, Mom,” Reesy said, defensively, “and you know why I did it,” Reesy responded sheepishly. “I’m sorry, Mom. I am so sorry.”

Charlotte’s lip quivered. “I’m sorry too! Sorry I ever laid eyes on you again!” Charlotte hung up as abruptly as she’d answered.

She had loved Reesy more than the other two put together, until Connie, Charlotte’s oldest, finally managed to turn Reesy and Cammy against her with her lies and her ugly ways.

“You’re the one, Connie! Why the hell did you bring your black ass into my house?” Charlotte screamed.

“Momma!” Reesy tried stepping between Charlotte and Connie, standing toe-to-toe like two boxers.

“I always hated you!” Charlotte glared at Connie.

“I always hated you too, so that makes us even!” Connie shot back.

“You ain’t better than me, Connie!”

“Shit, Momma!” Connie smirked. “Who the hell isn’t better than you?”

Charlotte closed her eyes, recalling the rage she felt surging through her whole body as she swung her arm in the air, bracing herself to knock the shit out of that girl. And all of a sudden, she felt the sting and the heat from the slap across her face, not from Connie, but from Reesy.

Those girls had all expected for Charlotte to be perfect, but of course, she wasn’t. No mother is ever perfect. She’d only been fifteen years old when she’d had Connie, and what she learned about taking care of children, she learned on her own. She’d made mistakes with all of them. Charlotte could admit it to herself and to them. Charlotte had thought too much of herself when she was young, and had put her needs before the needs of her girls, but she had atoned for her selfishness. Charlotte had atoned for everything she’d done from taking off with Sam and leaving her two oldest girls behind to maybe being a little too hard on Cammy. She had paid for the things she’d done a hundred times over in ways they could never imagine. And she was still paying for it.

Hell is living twenty-seven years and not knowing if your children are alive or dead. She had had Cammy in that time, but there was no replacing her golden girls, Connie and Reesy, who she’d left behind in Denver. Charlotte had come to terms with the fact that she’d never see her girls again, until she got a letter in the mail from Reesy. Her baby had hired someone to find Charlotte, and for the first time in nearly three decades, she had finally had a prayer answered and a chance to go home again. But just as quickly as it had been given to her, those girls had brutally snatched it away from her. Lynn Randall had brought Charlotte to Murphy, Kansas, to save her life. Lynn had saved her, but she’d condemned her to this place, and Charlotte’s children had taken the key and left her here, like garbage, to rot.

Intimate Conversation with Mary B. Morrison

New York Times bestselling author Mary B. Morrison believes that women should shape their own destiny. Born in Aurora, IL, and raised in New Orleans, LA, she took a chance and quit her near six-figure government job to self-publish her first book, Soulmates Dissipate, in 2000 and begin her literary career.

Mary’s books have appeared on numerous bestseller lists, and she’s a frequent contributor to The Michael Baisden Show. Mary is also actively involved in a variety of philanthropic endeavors, and in 2006 she sponsored the publishing of an anthology written by 33 sixth-graders.

In 2010, Mary produced a play based on her novel, Single Husbands, which she wrote under her pseudonym, HoneyB. Mary currently resides in Oakland, CA, with her wonderful son, Jesse, who is following in his mother’s creative footsteps and pursuing a career in TV/film. Visit Mary online at www.marymorrison.com

BPM: Your journey to publication is a remarkable one. As mentioned earlier, you left your career with the government to pursue your dream of writing. What first inspired you to become a writer and storyteller?

Simply put, my soul mate. When we parted after I say, ‘five’ he says ‘seven’ years, I knew I had to write Soul Mates Dissipate. The title remained the same for seven years before I actually wrote the book. I didn’t write our life story but I wrote the storyline of two soul mates meeting, then later struggling to hold on through infidelity and deception, and finally parting ways but never parting hearts.

BPM: What advice would you give women pursuing their own dreams or struggling with the decision whether to take a risk to change their lives or careers in some way?
Eddie Murphy inspired me tremendously. I haven’t met him yet but I saw him during his standup RAW tour in Oakland years ago and he said, “In order to move forward in life you must let go and never look back.” I took his advice when I quit my near six-figure Federal government job in 2000. I could’ve taken a leave of absence from my job just in case I didn’t make it as a writer. I could’ve kept my job while I was writing.

If a woman is full-time employee, single-mother or wife constantly cooking, cleaning, and daydreaming about what if she didn’t have to wear so many hats she could do what she really wanted to do, then that’s the woman I’d tell, “Stop putting your needs and desires last.” As Russell Simmons says, ‘Do You.’ If you struggle to do everything, you risk doing nothing well. Let go of the things and the people blocking your blessings so you can grow. Confront your deepest inner fears knowing that you are worthy of greatness.” Life is filled with risks. In order to succeed you must take chances, have faith, and believe that the Creator will provide all that you need.

BPM: How do you define success?
Doing what you want to do and doing it well. My son and I Executive produced my first stage play, Single Husbands. We co-wrote the script. I financed the entire production. We were hands on from start to finish. Our success depended on us doing our part. The director, cast, music composer (D’Wayne Wiggins), and everyone that helped made our production the best sold out stage play in Oakland in over ten years. No one is successful alone. I don’t take credit for my success. I give it to my family, friends, fans, and publishers.

BPM: What makes you powerful as a person and a writer?
The readers hold the power not me. No matter how great I believe each novel is, readers will always tell me their truth. If a person gives what I consider constructive criticism, I take their comments into consideration. On the other hand, if a person’s feedback is simply they didn’t like the story, I understand that everything isn’t for everybody. That being said, “I simply do my best.”

BPM: Allow me to introduce Mary's latest book, THE ETERNAL ENGAGEMENT.  From New York Times bestselling author Mary B. Morrison comes a moving, unforgettable story of lives at a crossroads, love lost and found, and the price of secrets…

THE ETERNAL ENGAGEMENT
Every heart has a secret . . .

After her high school sweetheart proposed and joined the military, Mona Lisa Ellington thought she’d never feel love again. So she settled, making a new life for herself with a man who cherished her…and made his living hurting others. Despite her reality, she prayed her fiancé would one day return.

Before becoming a television reporter, Katherine Clinton knew she’d marry her high school sweetheart and live happily ever after. But when he left for the military, she had to make new plans for her and their son. Despite his long absence, Katherine dreamed of the day her fiancé would return and make her family complete.

William Lincoln joined the military to make his grandfather proud. He never imagined he would be gone so long, or that the fiancées he left behind would reignite emotions he thought he’d never feel again. But his selfish proposal to two women is the least of his problems, because all three will face the consequences of too much deception.

BPM: How long did it take you to fully develop a personality for each character so that you felt that you could really get inside their head?
Sometimes I start developing characters in my head years before I begin developing them on paper. Somewhere between the first and fifth chapters my characters tell me who they are. I constantly rewrite the first half of each novel until each major character has a distinct voice and unique personality.

BPM: Was there ever a time when you felt like you were learning something new about each character as you were writing?
Absolutely. Getting to know my characters is like meeting a new friend or discovering something new about an old friend. My characters are real people to me. I constantly talk with and listen to them interact with one another..

BPM: What was one unusual thing that happened while writing THE ETERNAL ENGAGEMENT?
Bakersfield, California was one of my settings for The Eternal Engagement. To my surprise, I learned a few things when I visited the city. I didn’t see many African-Americans on the roads I traveled and places I visited (including the bookstores). But I never felt uncomfortable or experienced any racism. I loved that. I enjoy visiting the cities I write about. The setting for my next novel is Houston, Texas.

BPM: What drives you to write?
Passion and the love I get from my fans. Writing is a form of art. I love sitting at my computer and watching my stories unfold. The things my characters do, amazes me sometimes.

BPM: How long did it take you to complete the book?
This is a tough question to answer because I don’t count days. I’m a morning person. I love to write between the hours of 8:00am and 6pm. I don’t write every day but I do write often. Lately, I’ve been working at home because whenever I go to my favorite restaurants and sit at the bar to pen a few pages, I almost always meet a new person. Several drinks, a few hours later and I haven’t accomplished much. But I can write anywhere I go. That’s why I keep my MacBook Air in my purse.

BPM: Did you write many drafts?
I rewrite extensively. Each time I open my document, I find myself starting from the very beginning. At times I do this way too much. I have to tell myself, “Girl, finish the book.” Each time I rewrite I’m adding details, correcting missing or misspelled words, or changing the sentence order to make the paragraph read more clearly.

BPM: What have you realized about yourself since becoming a published author?
Nothing out of the norm. I started out self-published. I don’t think self-published authors get the recognition they deserve. They are business owners first and authors second. At least that how I see it. I’m not afraid to take a risk on whatever I believe in. I love my family, friends, and fans. I’ve always been and continue to be a strong woman. What I mean by that is I love myself first. I speak my mind. I’m humble. At times very generous but I’m not generous to a fault.

BPM: What's the most important role writers play in today’s world?
Most important. Let’s see. Staying true to their characters. The rest will take care of itself.

BPM: Do you have any advice for people seeking to publish a book?
Yes. Do your research. Consider all of your options before making an investment or decision. Find your niche in this industry or you’ll become just another writer. The world owes us nothing. As writers we are indebted to our readers. You owe them your best. And stop looking at the success of writers like myself and ask what did we do to become successful.

I think most aspiring authors will be surprised, maybe even shocked to learn how much money and time I put into promoting my work. The publisher is not solely responsible for promotions. At the end of the day, your success is your responsibility. Oh, and always appreciate your fans. Send books to our troops overseas. I do.

BPM: Finish this sentence- “My writing offers the following legacy to future readers...”
A great book can be written in 1840 and still have an impact on readers in 2040. I hope my work transcends time. I pray that the female empowerment messages in my books will continue to uplift women for many generations and decades to come.

BPM: What do you think of the new digital age of reaching your audience?
I’m always thinking of ways to stay in constant contact with my fans. I absolutely love Facebook. Also, ebooks are great. On my list of things to do is to learn how to electronically personalize my fans’ ebooks. I’ve seen the app and how it works but with so many books to write, I have to make time to learn new things like speaking Spanish.

BPM: Will any of your books be optioned for movies?
Soulmates Dissipate is in pre-development for a feature film with Universal Studios and Leslie Small as director. By the time this article post, we will have hired the screenwriter. It’s a seven film deal for all the books in the Soulmates Dissipate series.

Also, Sweeter than Honey is being considered for a film deal and there’s an offer for me to write, produce, act (as a sexologist giving advice with clothes on thank you) and direct adult films under HoneyB. I’m seriously considering this because African-Americans need to been viewed as desirable, sexy, and confident when it comes to XXX films. I don’t like what I’m currently seeing in our adult videos and since I have the opportunity to change the landscape, I plan on doing just that.

BPM: Share with us one thing most readers don’t know about you?
I’m silly. I talk in an animated voice but only around my son. I make silly faces. I’d love to be the voice of a Disney character. I laugh a lot with my son. He often says, “If only your fans knew how silly you are.”

BPM: Any special message or thoughts you’d like to share with your fans?
I love and appreciate each of you. I pray peace and prosperity resonates within your mind, body, and soul. I’d love to hear from you. Please visit me online at www.marymorrison.com.  No matter how difficult the journey, always navigate with Faith!

Yesterday's Lies by Terri D.

What Secrets do you keep from the one you share everything with?

Secrets. Lies. Half-Truths.  A poignant tale of a circle of close knit friends whose lives are more intertwined than they realize. That is until the blurred lines of Love, Lust and Friendship begins to reveal the half-truths and lies that exist. Will the secrets they all hold from the past ruin their friendship and lives forever?

Message to the Readers from Terri D.
I am a single mother of three. I once read that children bring our subconscious issues into life. They show us the parts of us that we need to heal. My children have always been my inspiration to push myself to get to the next level. I see little pieces of me in each of them but they have all grown up to have their own distinct personalities. I have worked in the Healthcare industry for over 20 years.

I am presently employed for a local Healthcare company and work in the Information Systems department. Although I work in IT I am not a "techie" as most people consider anyone who works in this field. I consider myself to be very analytical which makes people I have know for a long time wonder where all of this creativeness came from all of a sudden. To this I say it has always been there just hidden beneath the surface.

I have kept journals as far back as I can remember. I always liked to write and express myself in writing. I have often been told I express myself in writing better than I do verbally. I dabbled in poetry from time to time, but have always gravitated more towards music. I am a singer and have also used that as an outlet for my creative energy. I come from a very musical family. All of our activities usually involve music in some form or fashion. I still sing in church, as often as possible, however, my writing intensified ten years ago while going through my divorce. It was a way for me to express myself without exposing what was really going on inside of me. At one point I allowed a close friend to read some of what I wrote and they commented that I had a very unique way of writing and expressing myself and they encouraged me to continue to write.

I have continued to journal and started to write my first book a few years ago but was not able to complete it. Earlier this year (2010) due to some events in my life a story came to me and I sat down and started to write. The words flowed freely and the next thing I knew I had over fifty pages typed. My debut book Yesterday's Lies is the finished product of that brainstorm one summer night. The characters although fictional, could be argued by those who know me well, are pieces of me in each one of them. Maybe not who I am in real life, but who I would like to be in my fantasy world.

I hope that you enjoy reading Yesterday's Lies as much as I have enjoyed writing it. It was a journey to get to the finished product but one that was well worth it. I have met some wonderful people along the way; ones that I hope will remain in my life from this point forward. As we go through the journey of life we cross paths with a lot of people. Some interactions are very brief and some last much longer. The trick is recognizing which ones to grab onto and cultivate and which ones we should let go of.

As you read the book ask yourself these questions: How far would you go for your best friend? What secrets would you keep from the one you share everything with?

Excerpt from Yesterday's Lies by Terri D.

Journal Entry -- Tuesday

As each day passes my thoughts of you and desire for you increase. When I close my eyes, I can drift back in time and feel your touch and I imagine I hear your voice. Oh how I wish I could hear your voice. I've let you get under my skin, and I feel very vulnerable because I know I'm in a position to get hurt. You told me when we first met, you were not looking for a relationship, and I agreed to your terms. I never expected you to be such a nice guy. I really want to call you but I promised Jada I would wait until Thursday.

In the middle of my entry, I checked the clock and it was only 10:15 pm. It's not too late to call, I thought to myself. I grabbed my phone and dialed the number. The phone rang four times. I was just about to disconnect the call when he picked up and answered with a simple, “Hello.”

“Hi Darien,” I said. “This is Toni.”

“Well hello, Ms. Toni,” he said and I felt like he was smiling through the phone. “I was just thinking about you.”

“Really?” I said. “That’s funny because you didn’t call me I called you,” I said with a hint of sarcasm.

“About that,” he started, “I wanted to call you but I got sent out of town on business suddenly yesterday morning. I didn't have your cell number on me. I've been in meetings all day long and have not had a minute to log in to send you an email.”

Trying to sound cool, I said “Darien its okay. I was just concerned because I had not heard from you since you left my house on Sunday, and I had not seen you around the office either. I thought maybe something had happened to you and I just wanted to check on you.”

“Oh I see, well as you can hear, I'm doing okay. I'm in Miami right now and am not sure, when I'm coming home. Hopefully this weekend, but not sure I really want to fly all the way back home just for the weekend when the only thing waiting for me there is my empty bed and my fish.”

Trying to sound very nonchalant, I said, “Yes I can understand that.”

We talked for another few minutes. Then I said, “Darien it’s getting late so I need to go. Did you save my number in your phone?”

“Yes I did.”

“Okay so call me when you can.”

“I will Toni, I promise.”

Journal Entry -- Tuesday continued…

I broke down and called you and even though Jada is going to have some choice words for me, I'm glad I did. I really enjoyed talking to you. Our conversation left me wanting more. I'm trying to put my finger on what it's about you that intrigues me the most. I think it's a combination of a number of things. First of all, I like your confidence. You carry yourself like you know exactly who you are and what you want. That's a real turn on.

In addition, you try to act like you're a player and women do not mean that much to you, but I can tell that you really like women. The way you talked about your mom and little sister I can tell you really like women. I mean most straight men like women. They love us and want to make love to us, but they do not really like us. I can tell you do. It's the way you listen that makes the difference. Women like to be heard more than anything else. I could write so much more but am very tired, so am closing for now. I'm looking forward to hearing from you tomorrow.

I placed my journal back in its hiding place, put my cell phone on the charger, and prepared to turn in for the night. As soon as I turned the light off my cell phone rang. I looked at the clock and it said 11:00 pm. Who is calling me this time at night? I thought to myself. I reached over to grab my phone off the charger to look at the number. It was an unfamiliar out of town number. I think the same one from the other day. Who is this who keeps calling me? I thought. I considered letting it go to voice mail again but I had a feeling I needed to take this call so I answered, “Hello. ”

Message from author Donna Hill's Monthly Newsletter
I was honored to be included in this wonderful collection of stories based on the lives of extraordinary real women. What made it even more important for me was that I was able to tap into my own real life experiences as Program Director at a residence for homeless teen mothers for many years. It was one of the most life-altering experiences of my life and I wanted to find a way to translate that into my character Verna. Your purchase of  MORE THAN WORDS will help to support recognizing other extraordinary women. Join us in celebrating women during Women's History Month.

Smack. Smack. Smack. Julia Caldwell listened to the familiar sound of a ball hitting the center pocket of a baseball mitt. It echoed through the hospital corridors, as routine as the monitors beeping at the nurses' station in Miami's Cari-dad del Cobre Children's Hospital. For the last month, the Cortez family, mother and fourteen-year-old twin sons, had been a fixture at the hospital; Michael Cortez and his baseball obsession were a welcome break from sickness and pain.
Michael and his brother, Manny, were twins, alike in so many ways except for a cruel genetic twist. Manny had leukemia. Michael did not. Manny had his mother at his side day and night. Michael did not.

As the healthy child in a single-parent home, baseball was the only comfort Michael Cortez had. Nobody, from the nurses to the doctors to other patients or parents, would ever ask him to stop the repetitive sound.

Every afternoon, Michael walked to the hospital from school and took up residence in either his brother's room or the family lounge. Not wanting to be a burden to his mother, he'd do his homework without being reminded, bring his mom coffee and then turn to the comforting routine of tossing the ball into the glove.

Smack. Smack. Smack.

From her small office near the nurses' station, Julia filled out the Request for Assistance forms for the Andre Sobel River of Life Foundation. As the social worker responsible for the pediatric wing of Caridad del Cobre, Julia had already been in contact with the program manager at ASRL and the foundation was expecting the formal request. Within twenty-four hours, Andre Sobel River of Life  would cut a check to Anna Cortez's landlord, electric company and phone provider. The rent for their apartment and other essential expenses would be taken care of while Anna sat by Manny's bedside, willing him to live. Anna had already lost her job because, as everyone at the hospital understood too well, a child's illness was all consuming. ASRL's motto was Compassion Can't Wait.

And the foundation always stepped up immediately.

Before Julia faxed in the Request for Assistance, she said her usual prayer of thanks to the people at ASRL, grateful she'd contacted the foundation almost two years ago for another single parent of a teenage girl with a brain tumor. Since then, Caridad del Cobre routinely applied to Andre Sobel River of Life  for funding for families who met the criteria—single caregivers who needed to be with their sick children.

Julia leaned against the wall and sighed. But who would make sure the needs of Michael Cortez, the healthy child, were met?

I AM Vanessa
by China Ball

Vanessa is a character that demands every man’s attention from the time she enters the room until the time she leaves. She’s bold, sexy and exciting. If men don’t give her attention, then Vanessa goes into show time mode and all exhibitionist acts are on the table. Vanessa will do things so outrageously sexy she makes sure every man in the room can not resist! They will all stand at attention and hoping they have strong zippers to contain the salutes. Vanessa is one of the most interesting characters from China Ball’s  “Eleven Months of Hell” trilogy.

Vanessa is the bad girl that does what most women only dream they could do. Vanessa wants to tell her story, and she starts from the very beginning. She states she comes from a family of whores. Yet most of the women leave the profession and go on to get an education to better their lives. Vanessa has been in every book of the HELL trilogy and was a very good friend to the main character Mercedes. Vanessa has read the books and agrees that she did all that Mercedes said she did, but is very disappointed that Mercedes didn't exactly tell things like they really went down.

Vanessa states, “I wasn’t born this way, I was made this way, and you’ll have to read my story to figure out why I am the way that I am. Plus I am a survivor, just like Mercedes and I credit her for the most successful side of me, because before her I never met anyone that had a positive goal in life. I want to give and receive pleasure from every man I choose. China’s version of my life story sugar coats what I am and all that I want to be. Now I’m telling my own story in my own words.

“Enough is enough” and I want all of you women to read and enjoy my story. You can’t help but to find me NASTY or SEXY (What Ever)!! You know you want to read about all that I do especially on all those lonely nights when you didn’t get the call you wanted. Let me give you a hand or anything to relieve you from your pent up frustrations.”

Read I AM VANESSA and form your own opinions. Just know that Vanessa really doesn't care what anyone thinks because she lives to shock and tempt all that lay eyes on her. Watch out you might be next!!

Family Secrets
by Sharon Rhodes

They Say the Truth Can Set You Free. But Can the Robertson Family Handle the Truth?

Sharon Rhodes' debut novel begins on June 8, 1976 when Shelia Robertson was just fourteen. On this hot day in June, Shelia never dreamt she would experience a terrifying nightmare that would later come back to haunt her thirty four years later. However, she swore to forget that dreadful day and vowed never to look back.

As the book jumps forward to present day, Shelia is faced again with another dilemma. She should be happy as she walks into the room filled with family and friends. After all, it is a celebration. Instead, Shelia is terrified of how her family will react. For years, she's kept a secret hidden deep inside and figured she'd take it to the grave. But she has no choice; she has to tell it. She owes it to her husband, children, and friends. Now, she's determined to shine a light on what she's buried. But can they handle the truth?

Apparently, Shelia isn't the only one with a secret. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that Shelia's family members and her two best friends are also concealing something. One by one, they're being exposed. And for some of them, it's a matter of life and death. For others, the truth will change their lives irrevocably.

Derrick the perfect son, a sophomore at University of North Carolina has brought a stranger to his mother's celebration but who is this stranger? It's not his girlfriend that his family adores. When introduced to the family, Derrick's parents are sure they have met this girl but neither is sure where until Derrick's father makes a revelation about their guest that could turn his marriage into a tailspin.

Sada, the daughter has a dirty little secret too. She married her high school sweetheart who is the father of her twins. But is Michael really the father and why does she accepts his infidelity? This question has caused many sleepless nights for Sada. The paternity of her children is disclosed when Brandon their son is involved in a serious accident that threatens his life. You will be surprised when a DNA test reveals the truth.

Karen, Shelia's long time childhood friend arrived at Shelia's celebration without her husband. Why is she lying about his whereabouts? Will she defy her husband's wish and reveal his hideout? She is torn between honoring her husband's wish and deceiving her best friend.

Veronica, Shelia's long time military friend blames herself for her husband's death so she seeks therapy to help cope with her guilt but she also seeks help elsewhere, from a relationship that is taboo.

Filled with family intrigue, dynamic plot shifts, and a whole lot of mystery, Family Secrets is about the surprises that lurk inside all of us and the courage it takes to open up.

Barnes & Noble Reader Book Review

"Highly Recommend - 4 Stars. Family Secrets is just what it says. The characters come alive and you just sit back and read all about their secrets. The book has an easy flow and before you know it you are into the characters and what's going on in their lives.

If you like authors like Mary Morrison, Carl Webber, or the old Terry McMillan books, then you should check this new author's book out. You won't be disappointed." -- Review written by SteffB

BROKEN LIFE—A Fight for Forever-Book 1
by Vangie Williams

This is a romantic tale of steamy passion and boiling fervor, which also wraps itself in the arms of virtually unexplored history. Moreover, this zeal-filled story crosses timelines, racial lines, cultural lines as well as the vast Atlantic. From generation to generation to generation, a special lineage of rare love is interrupted, entwined lives are broken, and fragile dreams are shattered because of an unrelenting curse rooted in the motherland.

Yet, the rigorous fight to break the curse's menacing grip steadily climaxes as young Bethel gains wisdom through her visions as well as the truths spoken from her father’s reluctant tongue. And then there is the cherished wooden box, a treasured but mysterious heirloom, which connects Bethel to both the curse and a counter to the same. Upon possessing the box, Bethel discovers the nearly elusive path to victory. Through a series of visions, which first take her to the mid 1800’s, she sees the way…

Bethel first envisions Marguerite. French-born. Classy and elite. Stunningly beautiful. Exceptionally intelligent. At the young age of eighteen, Marguerite is her father’s pride and his joy. Jean-Pierre dotes on Marguerite and sends her on holiday to the new country of America. He has entrusted Marguerite’s care to Julia. Julia is a surrogate mother who reared Marguerite from birth. She gladly filled the void when Marguerite’s mother sacrificed her own life while birthing her daughter.

Nearly as soon as her feet touch American soil, Marguerite’s delicate, genteel life changes drastically. Unbelievably so, she first meets her future husband, Thomas, and, indeed, finds herself married to him in a day’s time. This chance meeting becomes the beginning of a chain of events. The very day Marguerite arrives in America, she suddenly becomes alone when poor Julia suddenly passes away. Jubilation and excitement give way to emotional turmoil, which she never anticipated, particularly on this journey. Thankfully, Thomas comes to her rescue and offers security and protection through marriage, even though subtle traces of Negroid blood peek through her fine features--a recipe for trouble in the zenith of American slavery. However, Thomas has a veil of secrecy of his own, one of which young Marguerite is totally unaware. To reveal his clandestine activities at the inception of their union would endanger them both.

By horse and carriage and riverboat, their adventure in America includes meeting the brother of Thomas (and the woman that is surprisingly his wife), the buying of slaves as well as brilliant land purchases. The whirlwind adventure of Thomas & Marguerite intensifies their rich love, and the birth of their baby brings it to an abrupt end.  Visions of Marguerite's broken life supply incentive for Bethel to fight for forever...

Book Review: Coffee Time Romance & More
The relationship between Thomas and Marguerite is fascinating and how they adjust to each other while meeting the support characters is interesting. The book is very detailed and complicated and readers need to pay strict attention. It is these details though that gives the book depth. As the book returns to Bethel and modern times, the ending is interesting and sets up for book two in the Broken Life-Fight for Forever series. I am expecting great things from Ms Williams. -- Anya (Reviewer for Coffee Time Romance & More) 4/5 Cups. To read the full review please go here.

Wouldn’t her audience be shocked to learn that Jisset is not the sexy mogul she appears to be, instead she’s a mousy, spineless, introvert? In addition, she’s also among the hordes of lonely singles?

Special guest, Shard Ellis, appears on her show. He puts her head in a mystical tail spin. Shard is obsessed by Jisset’s sensuality and her take charge nature. Little does he know that trembling beneath the gorgeous wig and phony accent, a spineless introvert hides. Jisset March really doesn’t exist, but Susan Chell does.  Sensual/Spicy

About Empress LaBlaQue
Hopefully, you’ve enjoyed reading the excerpt from Wearing Big Girl Panties. I'm sort of a Johnny-come-lately to Interracial Mainstream Romance. Most people feel uncomfortable with unfamiliar writing styles. Never-the-less, E-Romance is ever changing. In the long run, a unique voice may be enduring.

I’m a bit eccentric, and humor intrigues me. Mixing words to create an unusual stream fascinates me; my Mainstream Romance is hardly typical. When you pick up my book, open your mind, and expect the unexpected. Characters will leap from the pages with realistic idiosyncrasies, and in-your-face honesty. Many publishers have specific writing guidelines, example: Writing in first person; I do so grudgingly. However, I don't like writing cookie cutter books. My writing craft brings me joy. That joy brings forth the best in Interracial Mainstream Romance. To find more LaBlaque IR creations, visit my web site at  www.empresslablaque.com    Thank you. Empress

Excerpt: Wearing Big Girl Panties by Empress LaBlaQue
Opening scene: Jisset and her Male Guest discuss Interracial Dating on her television talk Show.

Jisset sat on stage in a casual setting while a crowd of women applauded her presence. “Thank you—thank you very much,” she acknowledged, her accent unbroken. “I‘d like to welcome our guest for today. Superstar NBA player, Bristol Brighton!”

The women broke into a hail of whistles and cat calls as Bristol walked onto the stage. Jisset learned, it took a lot to calm a pack of screaming, waving women.

Bristol‘s blonde hair was closely cropped and he stood about 6‘5”.

Jisset crossed her legs and started her questions. “Hello Bristol, how in the world have you been?”

Bristol leaned against his chair and stroked his chin. “I‘ve been wonderful, Jisset.”

“We hear you‘ve been a busy man.” She waited patiently for his answer.

Bristol nodded. “That‘s true—that‘s true. I‘m up for a part in a movie, but they‘re still auditioning.”

“Fan‘tastic. I hope you get the part. Now, Bristol you know the rules. Our audience has been polled. They may ask you any question they wish and you must answer the question to the best of your ability. Be honest, or these women would tear you to shreds.”

Bristol opened his palms as if he had nothing to hide. “Is there any other way to be?”

“O-kay. Our audience wanted to know how you feel about dating the African American woman.”

Bristol paused, while the camera zoomed in on his large blue eyes. “Truthfully, I like them. I wouldn‘t hesitate to date a black woman if she was the right one. One thing I like is that they stand up for themselves. They‘re not an easy push over.”

Addressing the audience Jisset replied, “Stereotypical statement. But nonetheless, ladies you‘ve heard it for yourself. Bristol said he wouldn‘t hesitate to date an African American woman, but only if she was the right one.” The audience applauded.

“So, Bristol. What type of black woman would catch your eye?”

Bristol tugged his earlobe. “Well, she needs to be true to herself, and not phony. She‘ll need to know how to relax and have fun. At the same time, she must be professional if and when the occasion arises.”

“Alright. Are you saying that some black women don‘t know how to handle social situations?”

Bristol stroked his chin and scooted back in his chair. “No, not at all. It‘s just that some handle themselves better than others.”

“Isn‘t that true of all women?” Jisset leaned forward. “So, if a typical black woman wanted to get your attention what would be the first thing she should do?”

Again, the camera came in for a close-up. “Number one, let me discover you. You know Jisset, black women have an inner beauty. Some need to let that beauty speak for them. If you‘re sexy, your body will speak to me. If you‘re the studious type, your demeanor will also speak to me.”

Jisset threw up her hands. “So, in other words, just be who you are.”

“Exactly. Not whiney or needy. Just appear friendly and interested.”

Cocking her head to one side Jisset asked, “…in the same things you‘re interested in, you mean?”

“No.” He shook his head. “I love learning about new things, so if you like to paint, or collect bugs, I‘m game for learning more about those things.”

Jisset folded her arms. “In essence you‘re saying, be yourself.”

“Yes. When it comes to women in general, I‘m drawn to the sexy, quiet, mysterious type. They‘re terribly intriguing and I love the challenge of getting to know them. A loud woman is all out there. When she opens her mouth, you‘ll know all of her business. Within five seconds, you‘ll know her mentality, her upbringing, her financial status, as well as her frequency or infrequency for having sex.”

Casting her eyes toward the quiet audience Jisset uttered, “I see.”

“Don‘t lay it all out there within five seconds. Give a guy something to chase, something to dig for. Once I read a woman, there‘s nothing else I want to know.”

“So, the loud woman at a party has already stamped herself.” Jisset cocked her head to one side, then smirked.

“Precisely.”

“Then she‘ll attract the same type of male species. It‘s like a red flag, for all women. By watching a woman a few moments, we already know if she drinks heavily, or uses drugs. We know by her choice of clothing, whether she‘s a cougar, on the prowl, has a house full of kids, or all three.”

“In other words,” she shrugged, “leave something to the imagination.”

Bristol nodded and leaned forward. “Let me give you a typical example. A woman walks into a club. These are my first impressions. Too much cleavage, skirt too short, too much make up—despite what she says, she‘s desperate, and trying hard to find a man.” The crowd made a hissing sound and some women threw thumbs down.

Jisset‘s skirt was short, and there was nothing to grasp, however she reached for her hem anyway. “If you could air your feelings and tell women one thing, what would that thing be?”

“I‘m glad you asked that question.” Bristol thoughtfully, stroked his forehead. “I‘m tired of women thinking that just because they sleep with me, one time, they have some sort of connection with me. Sex is sex. We both had a good time, now go home and let‘s move on.”

Jisset drew her lips tightly. “No favoritism?”

“No favoritism, Jisset. When you come on to me, we know it‘s all about getting me in bed. You don‘t own my heart. It‘s just sex.”

A hail of laughter erupted from the crowd. “Oh, so some women think they should be able to call you when they need something. Am I right?”

“Yeah,” Bristol ran his knuckle beneath his nose. “And frankly, I‘m tired of it.” He looked across the audience and pleaded. “Mutual sex is mutual sex. I don‘t owe you anything.”

A gasp of disapproval ran over the audience. Jisset tried to calm their reservations. “Okay ladies; don‘t expect Bristol to validate your parking if you have sex.”

“We‘re almost out of time, but we can take a question from the audience.” Jisset scanned the audience for a likely candidate. A mousy black woman stood up and Joe took her the mike. “I‘m not loud, and I don‘t dress provocative. Would you date a woman like me?”

Bristol grimaced. “Typically, no. And I don‘t mean that in an ugly way, babe.”

Jisset turned toward Bristol and sighed. “She looks fine to me. Size her up. Tell her what‘s wrong.”

With palms extended, Bristol stated his finding. “I don‘t mean to hurt your feelings, mind you. But you seem to lack the confidence most men find so sexy. I love confident women. Sexy, quiet, confident women. A woman can slay me with those qualities.”

“Now you have it ladies. Confidence is the key. We‘ve enjoyed having Bristol Brighton, Superstar NBA player and eligible bachelor. Let‘s give him a big hand and good luck with that audition.” Wearing Big Girl Panties.

When Love Evolves
by Lonz Cook

When Simone’s conniving husband Stefan is caught dealing with the Mafia, the world she knows is changed. She is left facing an investigation, murder, and revenge while striving to save a company she loved––a company she inherited from her late Aunt Marge. With the help of her sister Sabrina, they devise a plan to survive the turmoil, but not without recruiting Rodney, Simone's old flame, who was bouncing back from heartache. Rodney devises a dynamic plan to assist Simone and Sabrina while marketing a production campaign.

Gail, a marketing associate who crosses paths with Rodney, joins his firm and they begin a relationship. When Simone's company’s trouble subsides, she sets out on the prowl for Rodney. She is desperate for the chance to rekindle their love. When Gail discovers Simone’s intentions, she battles for a man whom she aspires to marry. But who will win Rodney’s heart?

Unlike the traditional romance novel, WHEN LOVE EVOLVES explores a more dramatic plot, one involving suspense, passion, rage and the mafia. Written from a male’s perspective, WHEN LOVE EVOLVES is a one-of-a-kind romance novel that will grip readers from start to finish.

Excerpt When Love Evolves by Lonz Cook

“Embezzlement, laundering! I can’t believe Stefan would do such a thing,” Simone said to Sabrina while driving from the lawyer’s office downtown. Frowning, Simone pondered at how things had gone wrong over the years. She’d married her ideal man. Stefan turned out to be just that: an idea. He’d maneuvered his way beyond Simone’s love and into her finances. It was over a year before Simone opened her life to him the way Rodney, a failed flame, had done for her. She had allowed Stefan access to her accounts out of love. Her eyes were blinded by her affection for a player, a man of few morals, who did not believe in true love. Stefan had seen a path to wealth, and it was the path he’d proudly traveled.

Stefan belonged to a group of people who played their luck on quick riches. He observed many men, comparing the lives of those who played the game of life fairly with the lives of those who cheated. It dawned on him repeatedly that good guys finished last and that immediate riches and wealth came to those who schemed their way to success.

It was like heaven when Simone crossed his path at the annual city fundraiser. She wore an intricate designer ball gown, accented with diamond bracelets and a five-carat necklace. He made his way to her and pursued the challenge.

Realizing her huntress personality, Stefan stayed within her sight for the next few hours but never approached her. He masked himself with a cloud of mystery and led Simone with a blindfold of seduction. He intrigued her in a way she’d never experienced. Stefan began to flirt with other women in front of Simone, leading her into a rage of desire. His ploy worked and compelled her competitive nature. She fought hard to get his attention the entire night, to divert him away from the gorgeous women. Stefan played her like a man fingering the fiddle. His goal was entrapment, but Simone didn’t see it.

Stefan never let on that he didn’t ask anyone else to dinner or drinks that evening. He had, however, leaned on a few women and hinted at having such an interest, especially in plain view of Simone. With the night lingering, the cat-and-mouse game about to end, he postured himself as the hottest bachelor available and the winner…Simone! While in the midst of a crowd of beautiful women attending the fundraiser, his sudden invitation for her to accompany him to dinner came when her guard was down. “Yes,” Simone said as she smiled triumphantly.

Dinner went well for Simone. She invited Stefan to her place afterwards, something Simone didn’t do often with men she’d just met. It was the bad-girl move, a spontaneous adventure—one she’d have never thought of embarking on with Rodney. Stefan moved as if he played a song, plucking all the right notes, which encouraged Simone to fall into his arms. Once they arrived at Simone’s mansion, Stefan smiled deep inside and visions of gold lingered in his mind. I’m landing this one; this one’s going to be my wife. Stefan moved toward Simone and pulled her close.

“What are you doing?” Simone grinned and embraced Stefan’s advances.

“It’s what you expect me to do. I’m not alone here; you’re ready for this.” Stefan leaned in with a kiss, and then kissed her again. Simone savored his touch and forgot anything but her lustful thoughts. Since her Aunt Marge had passed away, she’d focused so much on managing her business and inheritance that she had never allowed outside influences. Simone never wanted to lose the money Aunt Marge had bequeathed, so she had concentrated on generating cash flow and building a successful company beyond her aunt’s wildest dreams. Nothing gave her joy like seeing the numbers grow, and her financial background and training had aided her in her efforts. But at the moment, she only focused on Stefan. “I so want this,” she said.

“I know you want this, just as I do.” Stefan continued his advances and led her up the stairs, searching for a bedroom. “Take me to where you’re most comfortable.”

“Turn there,” Simone said. Stefan turned into Simone’s room where there was a queen-sized canopy bed, silk linens, and soft, white chiffon curtains. He guided her to the side of the bed, kissed her, and pushed her onto it.

Women Rock by Electa Rome Parks

If I had the opportunity to live my life over, I would like to come back as a woman, again, without hesitation. That's a fact. I adore being a woman and all that entails. Phenomenal Woman by Maya Angelou sums it up beautifully.

It's the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I'm a woman

I think women are the most powerful, special and divine creatures on earth and some of the best and meaningful times of my life have been spent in the company of my sister friends.

There is nothing quite like the society of womanhood that nurtures, protects, grooms and loves with so much passion and distinction.

I am who I am and what I am today because of life lessons learned at the knees of my mother, aunts and female cousins. I am a strong, resilient, independent and self-sufficient woman because of them. I pray that someday someone will be able to say the same of me.

Over the years, I have developed friendships with a small number of girlfriends that will last a lifetime. I love them like a sister and they love me back even when we get on each other's nerves. However, that's the beauty of it all. They have been there for me through thick and thin, flowing tears of joy and sadness, wonderful triumphs and devastating tragedy. My best girlfriends have comforted me during the death of my mother, celebrated my marriage and rejoiced in the birth of my children. There is so much history and that means everything to me…they know me as well as I know myself.

Girl talk over the phone that lasts for hours, unbridled laughter and gossip over drinks and dinner, making a six-hour road trip just because I asked, checking in on me when I'm not feeling well, supporting my dreams as if they are their own.

There is truly something spectacular that encompasses a genuine circle of women. There is magic and power in their midst that rises up and transforms.

Not too long ago, I recall reading a short passage via the Internet; someone forwarded it to me. It focused on advice an elderly grandmother gave to her only granddaughter the night before her big wedding. She calmly and cautiously told her granddaughter no matter what happened in life, never let go of her friends. The young, soon to be bride reflected on how much she adored her future husband and how she couldn’t wait to have his children; he was all she needed in her life. Then the grandmother wisely explained: Husbands may come and go, children grow up and take on lives of their own, but friendship, true friendship, is everlasting. Cling to it.

Sure enough, years later, the granddaughter and her husband had divorced, the children had graduated from college with careers and families of their own, but the granddaughter had adhered to her grandmother’s advice and clung to her friends. They, her friends, were still there. . . through it all.

In my newest release, True Confessions, readers will appreciate the genuine ‘best friends forever’ friendship of Kennedy and Taylor. They are two friends who have each other’s back through thick and thin. There is a genuine love and solid bond that has existed since their college days and has transcended beyond being simply friends, they are family. Neither is perfect and they both come with their childhood baggage, but their friendship is an anchor that is solid.

I'll say it again, from the bottom of my heart, women rock!

Intimate Conversation with Stacy-Deanne

Stacy-Deanne (Dee-Anne), often referred to as, “Interracial Romance’s First Lady of Crime and Mystery” is an award-winning novelist of crime fiction, mysteries and interracial romance. She’s a writing veteran of over 13 years and has been writing professionally since 19 years old. Her published works include, “Divas of the New Millennium”, “Everlasting” and “Melody”.

Her books have been reviewed by prestigious publications such as Billboard Magazine and BlackBeat Magazine. She’s featured in the NAACP-nominated 2006 book, “Literary Divas: The Top 100+ African-American Women in Writing”. She was born, raised and resides in Houston, Texas.

BPM: What makes you powerful as a person and a writer?
I’m powerful as a person because I am very determined. I go after things I want and I do not give up. I am powerful as a writer because I break molds. I am one of few black mystery and crime writers as well as the first mystery and crime writer in the interracial romance genre. I am a big believer in thinking outside the box, being unique and crossing over to different audiences with my work.

BPM: What have you realized about yourself since becoming a published author?
That I’m stronger than I thought I was. Writing is an industry where you have to have very tough skin and hold your ground. Your confidence is constantly tested. After publication you’re exposed the world’s opinions of you. It can be a hard thing to take sometimes but doing what I love outweighs any negativity I might experience.

BPM: What is the most rewarding aspect of your career?
For me it’s the ability to create stories and impact readers. I love taking readers to another place and providing an escape from reality. I write mainly to entertain and if I educate or my work hits a reader deep in the process, it makes it more worthwhile.

BPM: Introduce us to your book and the main characters. On Kindle or Nook?
“Giving up the Ghost” (Peace in the Storm Publishing) is my fourth release and first installment of my new crime and interracial romance series. The main characters are Detectives Brianna “Bree” Morris and Steven Kemp. They debuted in my ’08 novel “Melody”. Bree is black and Steven is white and the background of their relationship is their past romance. The genre is contemporary, crime/detective fiction, mystery and interracial romance. The book will be available in print, Kindle and Nook.

BPM: Take us inside the book, Giving up the Ghost. What are two major events taking place in the book?
Cheyenne Wilson’s brutal attack unleashes a domino effect on a lot of people’s lives. Secrets are uncovered, affairs exposed and people become so desperate they go to all lengths to get or to keep what they want.

Bree goes on an unyielding hunt to find out who beat Cheyenne and with every turn she puts here life in danger. While doing her best to stay dedicated to Cheyenne, she finds herself struggling internally because she’s falling in love with the man who may have attacked Cheyenne. Besides that, someone has been stalking Bree for months and he stays a step ahead. Every time Bree comes up for air with one thing, there is something else that drags her back underwater. Before it’s over, she has an internal struggle that will change her forever.

Blurb from Giving up the Ghost:
Albany Detective Brianna “Bree” Morris is having the year from hell. A sadistic admirer has been stalking her for months and now her friend Cheyenne Wilson has been beaten and left for dead.

With her ex-lover and faithful partner, Steven Kemp, Bree thrusts herself into the case. It’s not long before they believe two unrelated British men are connected to the attack. Michael is a womanizing artist with a ferocious appetite for rough sex. Simon is a wealthy free spirit looking for love in all the wrong places, but has one too many skeletons in his closet.

Bree struggles to determine fact from fiction when it comes to Michael and Simon but her attempts are blurred by Michael's manipulation and her sexual attraction to Simon, who Steven’s convinced cannot be trusted.   Meanwhile the stalker does everything in his power to get close to Bree and his obsession evokes a spiral of violence. Bree must trust her heart to find answers but her heart leads her to the most dangerous man of all.

BPM: What are some of the issues, needs or problems addressed in this book?
There are many serious issues in my book but I’d say stalking and mental illness are the biggest. I did my best to remember that this isn’t only entertainment and I tried to address these issues compassionately. I’ve written about stalking many times. I hope my book shows people how dangerous this situation can get. It’s more than a series of phone calls or unwanted attention. It often leads to violence and murder. I show that cycle in this book. I give the audience a look inside mental illness from the character’s point of view and lightly and hope that readers will see the respect I have for people who unfortunately go through this by how I dealt with it in the book.

BPM: Share with us your latest news or upcoming book releases.
The Season of Sin, book two in the Bree and Steven Crime Series will be my next release. This time the detectives plunge headfirst into a murder case that will reveal secrets of the ones closest to the victim and expose a lot of people who had motive to want her dead.

About the Author Tiphanie Thomas
Tiphanie Thomas
is a Michigan native and former financial analyst. She loved books and writing since a young girl. Visit her at: www.tiphaniethomas.com.  Tiphanie shares a little about her journey below:

Born in Jackson, Michigan, my mother taught me to read when I was four. I remember reading to my kindergarten class and living at the library, hence my love of books began.  Then when I was thirteen I discovered romance novels  (I know, too young to be reading Johanna Lindsey!). But I did, and I’ve been in love ever since.

About sixteen, I was so in awe of romance authors that I dreamed of giving another person the same wonder and happiness that reading gave me. So I started writing and continued reading, falling in love with Susan Elizabeth Philips, Toni Morrison, and Diana Gabaldon. I finished college getting a degree in Accounting.  Then, at twenty-five, a story I was dreaming about stuck in my head and wouldn’t let go.

Last year, I completed my first novel about a runaway and a movie star who discover falling in love is just the beginning, and now they must face fears and challenges.  I’m so excited to share my dream with the world, and hope that you all enjoy reading it as much as I love creating the book.  Visit Me: www.tiphaniethomas.com

BPM: Who are your mentors? Where do you find your inspiration?
Some of my mentors have been those who came before me, not hands on but showing by example, like Octavia Butler, Terry McMillan, James Baldwin, and Stephen King. Today, I've learned much from talented author-friends like Mary B. Morrison, Eric Jerome Dickey, and Victoria Christopher Murray, among others. My love of writing inspires me by piquing my curiosity in certain topics, motivating me to breathe life into characters so I can explore their journeys in my mind's eye. That's exciting!

BPM: What have you realized about yourself since becoming a published author?
I've realized that I am very effective at managing the reclusive times that are absolutely necessary when it comes to writing - some can't. I know when it's time to shut down the computer and see to my needs and connect with others, and I have great people in my life who understand and respect my deadlines. I'm very disciplined and the life of a writer suits me well.

BPM: What is the most rewarding aspect of your career?
The most rewarding part of my career is hearing from readers. I so enjoy connecting with readers who've taken the time to not only read my works, but to also sign my guestbook, send emails, share their lives, post reviews, or come out and meet me. I'm honored and appreciative. My readers make me smile big!

BPM: Do you have any advice for people seeking to publish a book?
Study the craft of writing and do the research on the business of publishing, whether you self-publish of accept an offer. Also, ask yourself if writing is your passion. Would you do it for free? If the answer is yes, then do the work, stay disciplined, develop a think skin, manage the lifestyle, be patient, and work toward making a living at it.

BPM: If you were not a writer, what would you be?
If I was not a writer I would be either an interior decorator or a professional bowler. I love both - do what you love!

BPM: When you have completed a project, how do you celebrate?
I celebrate by making sure to enjoy my favorite meal, along with a chilled glass of wine champagne. I take a long bubble-bath, perhaps enjoy a massage, and make sure to get away somewhere out of town for a while with someone I love, just relaxing and recharging until the next one.

BPM: Hot Seat-- share with us ONE detail about you or a hobby readers would enjoy.
Detail: I was a commercial actress and my first acting job was a one-on-one scene with legendary actress Angela Lansbury, who's the most beautiful and patient spirit I've ever met. She sat nearby and chased away the butterflies, even when she wasn't in the scene. I'll never forget her.

BPM: Introduce us to your book,
SIXTY-NINE and the characters.  On Kindle or Nook?
In my third title, SIXTY-NINE, Magnolia Butler, Rebe Richardson and Darla Clark are about to turn the big 4-0.   They're all born in 1969 (thus the title).   They've been best friends since high school and have lived life on the safe side of the street, especially when it comes to sex.   SIXTY-NINE is a coming-of-age story of sisterhood and friendship, and about how our upbringing and experiences shape our ideas about life, sometimes leaving us unfulfilled and dissatisfied, though it can also be true that some things are better off left alone.   One New Year's Eve, these three best friends make a vow to go beyond their boundaries and the outcomes change their lives forever.   SIXTY-NINE is erotica, available in trade paperback, and on Kindle and Nook.

BPM: Take us inside
SIXTY-NINE. What are two major events taking place?
1) Darla Clark has been a widow for five years and has been celibate since her husband's death. She's at a crossroads as far as whether to move on, or continue to show respect to her husband's memory by never again sharing her heart or body with anyone, just as her father has done ever since Darla's conservative mother passed away. The toughest part for Darla is that when her husband died, she was in bed with him.

2) Magnolia Butler is in a make-up to break-up relationship with Mr. Wrong whose name is Neal Graham, whom she just can't seem to shake. The supposed last straw was that he cheated with his freaky-deaky secretary, yet now he wants Darla back "one more time." She vows it'll never happen again, and also vows to explore her own wild side of life, believing if she'd just been a little more of a vixen, he would've never strayed. But being that it's a small world, she finds one particular encounter to be too close for comfort.

BPM: What situation or revelation prompted you to write your book,
SIXTY-NINE
My characters were created after watching an episode of The Oprah Show on the topic of sexual repression. She talked about how some women have never had an orgasm, and that some do not know how to enjoy sex, while others know how and are willing, yet the old programmed messages of guilt speak louder than their desire to enjoy themselves freely. I see this as a problem in our society for women. We women need to be educated and seek help if necessary. The word sex is still so negative to so many. Healthy sex between consenting adults, or alone, is a woman's right as well as a man's.

BPM: Who do you want to reach with your book and the message within?
I would like women who might feel some sort of sexual repression to relax and embrace their sexuality. Mind you, I'm not saying be promiscuous and partake in risky behavior. Whether you have a lover or not, learn as much as you can about your own body and how it works, what it looks like, focus on your likes and dislikes, express yourself and ask for what pleases you. Be more creative. Try something new that you're comfortable with. If you have repressive aspects that have caused problems, seek help from a counselor and/or gynecologist. Enjoy yourself and be happy. That is key.

Even women who don't have repressive issues might recognize a friend in this story, and men could learn a lot about the women in their lives by reading SIXTY-NINE. It could help men to become more patient and understanding. It's all about sexual awakenings, in the book, in one's mind, and in the bed.

BPM: What are some of the specific issues or problems addressed in this book?
In SIXTY-NINE, I address the inability to achieve orgasm, a woman's first experience on an adult website, abusive parents, conservative upbringings, economic pressures, betrayal, threesomes, mother-daughter-issues, mid-life stripping, love-addiction, second chances, and more.

BPM: Share with us a quote from one of the most powerful chapters.
I suppose that would be the opening line of the book: She really did love her best friends, but less than twenty years ago she slept with her best friend's man and got pregnant.

BPM: Ultimately, what do you want readers to gain from your book?
I want women to learn to be Sex-see, as I call it, seeing themselves as sexy, feeling sexy and looking sexy for themselves. I have a "Pynk Dares You To Be Sexy" chapter in SIXTY-NINE that lists 26 ideas or homework assignments on how you can be sexier. Try a few alone or with a partner whom you trust. You just might find new meaning in the term Sixty-Nine. Flip your sex life to a brighter side.

BPM: Share with us your latest news, awards or upcoming book releases.
I'm happy to say that I was an honoree at the SistahFriend Book Club's African-American Literary Festival, where myself and other authors were awarded the 2010 Pink Diamond Award. Also, EROTIC CITY was nominated in the best fiction category for an African-American Literary Award. SIXTY-NINE hits the shelves on March 25, 2011, and I'm wrapping up my 2012 title called POLITICS ESCORTS BLACKMAIL, about the call-girls and politicians in New York City. It's Madam Money Watts' fictional memoir.

Chapter One
Not Necessarily In That Order......

"Why is my life so damn complicated?" Victoria asked herself as she steered her car past her circular driveway, toward the car pad in the back. She turned off the engine and sat for a few minutes, reflecting on the last twelve hours of her day. Work and men, not necessarily in that order, had thoroughly wrecked her nerves.

She grabbed her handbag, leather attaché, and umbrella from the passenger seat, took a deep breath, and readied herself for the cold Atlanta rain that had been falling all day. Looking overhead at the evening sky, Victoria could see that it was just as unsettled as her mood. She stuck out one leg, planting her size-nine, black Ferragamo onto the cold, wet pavement. "Damnit, it's days like this that I wish I'd never turned the garage into a home gym," she cursed, quickly pushing her umbrella open as she made a mad dash for the door. She fumbled with her key until it slid into the lock.

"Home sweet home," she said out loud. Each time Victoria walked through her door she felt an immediate sense of comfort. After patiently saving money, buying high-end furniture, scouring antique stores, and then garnering her treasured finds in a storage unit she'd rented, Victoria had finally found her dream home. This month made one year since Sherry Smith, realtor extraordinaire, had led her to 1701 Summerset Lane.

"Sherry, this house is beautiful!" Victoria had marveled, pulling her long black hair behind her ear as she and Sherry approached the large Tudor-style house.

"I came by first thing this morning to check it out for myself," Sherry smiled, flashing her perfect, cosmetically whitened teeth. "This home is a lovely split level with three large bedrooms including a master suite. There's even an extra bonus room that'll be great for a home office. Victoria, I know you'll just adore the large living and dining room; they're perfect for entertaining. And wait 'til you see the hardwood floors, high ceilings and crown moldings throughout. Believe me, this house is you, dear," Sherry gushed, already calculating her sizeable commission.

Things had been very different twelve months ago when Victoria walked into her dream home—out of a recent nightmare. And as she replayed today's events in her mind, she had a funny feeling that her life was about to take an unpredictable turn. Her day began with an interesting twist when Ted Thornton knocked on her office door.

Warm Cinnamon Sugar ...

"Hi Ted, how are you?" Victoria smiled, startled to see him as she looked up from the stack of papers on her desk.

"I'm well, thank you," he smiled back, allowing his eyes to quickly dart over both Victoria and her office.

Ted Thornton had been hired at ViaTech seven months ago. Lamar Williams, the Founder and CEO of the company, had successfully wooed him from Asco Systems, one of their toughest competitors. Lamar was retiring next spring, and had handpicked Ted as his successor to run the company he'd built from a small storefront into a telecommunications powerhouse. Ted was well known and highly regarded throughout the telecom industry, which made Lamar confident in his choice of the man he both admired professionally and respected personally. It was even rumored that Ted had negotiated a deal with Lamar to become part owner of the privately held company once he assumed the permanent CEO position next spring.

For a man of forty-five, Ted looked younger than his years. He was very handsome ... one could even say outrageously so. His ocean blue eyes, tall, lean body and confident allure attracted all the women at ViaTech, many of whom boldly flaunted themselves at him. He could have his pick of women, but he was careful, never giving them so much as a second glance. His nonchalance served to make him even more intriguing to his many admirers, particularly since it was no secret that his marriage of over twenty years was about as sunny as London in the fall.

"Victoria, do you have a minute?" Ted asked.

"Sure, have a seat," she said, motioning to the chair in front of her desk. Victoria had only seen Ted twice in the seven months he'd been with ViaTech. Their first encounter had been during her department's senior management meeting. He'd only been with the company for less than a week, and no one had expected him to attend department meetings so soon, or without warning. He had come in, stayed for a few minutes, then left as suddenly as he'd entered.

The second time was two months later when he'd requested individual meetings with senior staff in the Atlanta headquarters office. Their meeting had gone well. They'd started out discussing business strategies and ViaTech's future, then shifted to a more casual conversation: his adjustment from L.A. to Atlanta and her preference of Atlanta over her hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina. They even touched on their personal lives. Nothing too deep. Just nice get-to-know-you questions—Where did you grow up? What are your hobbies and interests? Their meeting ran well over the scheduled thirty minutes, and even Jen, Ted's personal assistant, had said that was a good sign because Ted Thornton wasn't a man prone to wasting time on idle chatter. But up to this moment, Victoria hadn't heard from him since that day many months ago.

Now, he was standing in her office and her mind raced to figure out why the hell he was there. She knew it wasn't every day that the acting CEO just happened to pop in for a visit. Victoria watched as he pulled out one of the leather chairs in front of her desk, unbuttoned the jacket of his gray, custom-made suit and took a seat. Even though most telecom companies practiced a relaxed dress code, ViaTech employees, save for the engineers, dressed like Wall Street investment bankers. He's very handsome, Victoria thought to herself, watching him settle comfortably into the chair.

"You have an incredible office," Ted observed, surveying the room. "The way you've decorated with art on the walls and plants all around ... it feels more like a room in your home than an office at work. And it smells good too."

Victoria smiled. "It's my job to make our employees feel comfortable when they come to me with problems or concerns, and I believe a welcoming environment helps to foster that." Although she appreciated his discerning eye and obvious good taste, she thought it was an unusual observation to make, given that most of the men at ViaTech could care less about her office's décor and had never commented on the fragrant smell that filled the room. But she noticed that Ted had taken in every detail.

"I like your style, Victoria," Ted smiled.

"Warm cinnamon sugar," she spoke up.

"I beg your pardon?"

"That's what you smell, it's warm cinnamon sugar–scented potpourri."

"Ahh ... very nice." Ted paused, giving himself a moment before proceeding with the speech he'd been rehearsing for days. "Victoria, as you know, ViaTech is the number two telecom company in the region. But our goal, and my plan, is to make us number one. The only way to hit that target is through the strength of our human capital. Only the best and the brightest can lead this company forward."

Victoria nodded in agreement, but wondered where he was going with the conversation.

"Five years ago the executive management team developed a highly selective year-long mentoring program to identify individuals who show great leadership potential. You're familiar with the program, are you not?" he asked.

"Yes, I'm very familiar with the Executive Mentoring Program. Our department handles the announcements." Who doesn't know about EMP? Victoria thought, letting out a frustrated sigh—but only in her head.

The EMP nominations for the upcoming year were due to be announced next week. Victoria was sure that Patricia Clark, the senior director of compliance, would be nominated from their department for the prestigious honor. But she couldn't figure out why Ted had come down to her office to share that information.

"Then all that's left to say is congratulations, Victoria. I'd like to personally nominate you for the program," Ted smiled.

Victoria sat in stunned silence. At thirty-three, she was one of the youngest senior directors in the company. She'd started in the marketing department when she came to ViaTech six years ago after leaving Queens Bank. But after working for a short time in the all-white, male-dominated department, the only upward mobility she saw available required a willing libido, which for her was out of the question. So when the HR department posted an internal search to replace the director of employee relations, Victoria seized the position. A few years later she was promoted to senior director. She excelled in her job, which was a piece of cake compared to the rigors of having worked for Queens Bank. In return for her hard work, ViaTech rewarded her with a handsome salary, bonuses, and perks.

But despite her corporate success, Victoria longed for something else entirely. Her plan was to leave ViaTech next summer and do what her heart had been calling her to do for as long as she could remember—open her own event-planning and catering business. She'd started Divine Occasions a year ago, shortly after she bought her house. Slowly, she'd begun to build a client roster and was putting plans into motion to run her business full-time. Being nominated for EMP was the last thing she'd expected, or wanted for that matter.

"Ted, I'm ... um ... honored. I really don't know what to say," Victoria stammered. She came from behind her desk as Ted rose to his feet on her approach. She sat down in the chair beside him, crossed her long legs, and quickly tried to organize her thoughts.

Ted carefully inspected her from the top of her head to the tip of her pointed toe shoes, all done so smoothly she didn't even notice. Her silk blouse, slim fitted skirt, and double strand pearls and matching earrings gave her a decidedly feminine look he loved. "Just say you'll accept my nomination," he encouraged.

"Well, it's just that I'm really shocked by this ... I wasn't expecting it at all." Victoria's mind raced. All she could think about were her plans to leave ViaTech.

She knew that start-up costs for her business would be high, so she'd decided to work until next June so she could stash extra money under her belt before fleeing the corporate dungeon. Victoria knew that her father would gladly give her as much financial backing as she needed, even without presenting the business plan she'd been working on for months. His guilt, if for nothing else, would dictate that. But this was something she wanted to do on her own. So instead of accepting his money, she planned to apply for a low-interest loan just like any other bank customer. Besides, she knew that her cousin, Jeremy, who was now helping to run Queens Bank, which her father owned, would probably demand a perusal of her business plan. In Victoria's opinion, Jeremy was a first-class asshole.

She knew she had to ease out of the EMP nomination without giving away her plans. Her father had taught her the golden rule of corporate America—never let them know all your business!

Ted sensed her trepidation. "Victoria, you seem a little hesitant?" He was trying to figure out why a go-getter like her wasn't jumping at the golden opportunity he'd just laid before her.

"Actually, I am. The truth is, I have a lot on my plate right now." She could see the surprise on Ted's face, but she continued. "It's just bad timing. I believe in giving one-hundred percent, and if I don't see that it's possible for me to do my best, I don't commit. That's why as much as I'm flattered by the nomination ..."

"Victoria," Ted interrupted, "I understand your concerns. And yes, committing yourself to this program will require extra hours and projects, in addition to your normal workload. But I'll see to it that you have the support and resources you'll need."

Ted hadn't planned on Victoria turning him down, and now he was scrambling to convince her to accept his nomination. He'd been looking for a way to spend time with her since the first day they met. But without a legitimate work-related project, the acting CEO couldn't spend leisure office time with one of his many employees unless there was a damn good reason.

Initially, Ted questioned his decision for choosing Victoria. Was it because he was attracted to her, or was it because she deserved to be in the program? In the end he realized it was both. Her outstanding reviews, high praise from the executive team, and her record of achievement made her a prime candidate. And an added bonus was that he would finally be able to spend time with the woman he'd been thinking about and desiring from afar.

"Ted ... again, I appreciate the consideration and vote of confidence. But as I said, it's bad timing."

"I must say, I'm disappointed." Ted leaned back in his chair, quickly plotting his next move. "The nominations won't be finalized until next Friday. I'd like you to take a week and think it over," he asked, masking his desperation. He stood and buttoned his suit jacket, signaling that he was about to leave.

Victoria rose on cue. "All right, I'll think about it," she said, even though she knew her answer wouldn't change.

As she watched him walk out of her office, she could feel there was something arrestingly different about him. He wasn't like most executive types she knew. He seemed familiar, almost like she knew him, even though this was only their third encounter.

Just as she returned to her desk to finish her paperwork, Denise, her administrative assistant, walked through the door. She stood there, arms crossed and staring. "Girlfriend, what kind of excuse are you gonna come up with for not accepting that man's EMP nomination? Telling him you can't dedicate one-hundred percent is some bullshit that ain't gonna fly."

"Have you been out there listening?"

"Absolutely. You know I gotta get the 411," she grinned.

Victoria pictured Denise standing outside her door with a glass cupped to her ear like a detective in a 1960's spy movie. Denise called Victoria by her given name in the presence of their colleagues, but when they were alone she affectionately referred to her as "Girlfriend."

Denise was impeccably dressed, well-organized, and knew her job inside-out. She was an unabashed woman who could read you like last week's news, yet be gentle as a lamb when the occasion warranted. There were three things about Denise that were constant; she always smelled of Chanel No. 5, her pretty, apple-shaped face always boasted a smile, and she always shot straight from the hip, never sugar coating anything. She had an Associate's degree in Administrative Office Technology and a PhD in common sense. She was sharper than a J.A. Henckels carving knife, and Victoria relied heavily upon her insight.

"Denise, why didn't you tell me that Ted Thornton was coming to my office? I was completely caught off-guard."

"Sorry. He must've come by my desk while I was in the copy room," Denise said, handing Victoria a thick stack of papers. "When I came back your door was half-closed. I was going to come in and see what was going on, but then I heard you two talking, and well ... I listened because Mr. Thornton never comes down to anyone's office," she said, placing her hands on her ample hips.

"I'm shocked. I just knew that Patricia had the nomination in the bag, at least that's what she's been telling everyone. Can you imagine how embarrassing it's going to be for her when she finds out that she's not one of the ten nominees?"

"That's her problem. This is one time she can't throw her legs open to get what she wants. That woman is so shady, I wouldn't trust her with the keys to the shit house."

"Damn!" Victoria laughed. "You're right about that. But seriously, Ted Thornton can give me a week or even a month, I'm not going to change my mind."

"And you shouldn't. You've put your dream on hold long enough. You have to make yourself happy, Girlfriend."

"Tell me about it. I'm tired of running my business on the side and trying to maintain this job at the same time. It's really taken a toll over the last year. I just wish I'd had the courage to make this decision sooner," Victoria lamented.

Intimate Conversation with Crystal V.  Rhodes

Crystal V.  Rhodes is an author and an award-winning playwright who has written for newspapers, magazines, radio and television. Her romance suspense novels have been nominated for and have won numerous awards. Her latest release, Still Waters… was selected as one of the Top 40 Books of 2010 by Black Pearl Magazine. The Written Word Magazine named Rhodes one of the Ten Up and Coming Authors in the Midwest.

BPM: What makes you powerful as a person and a writer?
If there is anything that makes me powerful as a writer it is that I understand the effect of the written word. A writer can use words to manipulate thinking for good or for bad. A well placed the instead of the word a can make a difference in the meaning of a sentence. The ability to recognize this fact makes any writer powerful, that’s why as a writer I have the responsibility of using my gift wisely.

BPM: Who are your mentors? Where do you find your inspiration?
I don’t have any direct mentors, but some of the writers who I admire in the romance genre are Beverly Jenkins and Donna Hill. They are both excellent writers and that’s what I strive to be. Writers in other genres who I admire are Maya Angelou and J. California Cooper. I like the style and substance of all four of these writers. Their creativity inspires me and encourages me to always do my best.

BPM: Success leaves clues, whose clues did you follow on your journey?
I follow the clues left by all of the writers of color, past and present, who have endured in spite of obstacles. They paved the way for the rest of us to live the dream of becoming published authors.

BPM: What have you realized about yourself since becoming a published author?
I have come to realize and to appreciate how disciplined I am when it comes to meeting writing deadlines. I’ve also come to realize that publishing is a business and now I treat it as such. After my first book, Sin, was published by a mainstream publisher, I established my own publishing company, Crystal Ink, and produced my second romantic suspense release, Sweet Sacrifice. It was nominated for a writing award. Four years later after the sequel to Sin, titled Sinful Intentions, was published, my company released a comedy fiction novel that I wrote with my friend L. Barnett Evans titled Grandmothers, Incorporated. I realized that not only could I produce well written books for others but for myself as well, and believe me the latter is very satisfying.

BPM: What is the most rewarding aspect of your career?
I have to say that publishing my own books is probably the most rewarding aspect of my career, but neck in neck is the thrill that I get when a reader writes to tell me that she or he likes what I have written. It was especially rewarding with the release of my first book, Sin. The storyline followed a female minister who falls for a man involved in the drug trade. It was a controversial topic and I didn’t know what to expect from readers, but the response was phenomenal, very positive. I even received positive comments from some female ministers. Hearing from readers is confirmation that I’ve sparked their interest which to me means that I’ve done my job well.

BPM: Do you have any advice for people seeking to publish a book?
My advice would be not to give up. Make contact with other writers, attend conferences, and hone your craft so that you can become the best writer that you can be. When you feel that you’re ready, do the research on what is the best way to get your book out there. These days there are so many ways to get published. An author doesn’t have to depend on a mainstream publisher. Authors can self-publish and e-books are changing the face of publishing. If an author wants to be published, where there’s a will, there’s a way. But getting published is just the tip of the iceberg; promotion is the key to success. After the book is published you want to get people to buy it. So I would advise writers to become well rounded in as many aspects of the publishing business as possible.

BPM: If you were not a writer, what would you be?
I was in social work administration before I decided to pursue writing. It was okay, but it really wasn’t what I wanted to do. I think my idea job would have been writing for a television series, or creating television ads. I’ve always fared better in a creative environment.

BPM: When you have completed a project, how do you celebrate?
I give a praise of thanks that I’ve achieved another goal and then I go on to set another one.

BPM: Hot Seat--Share with us ONE detail about you or a hobby readers would enjoy.
I’m not very complex. My hobby is traveling and I take every opportunity to do so. In April of 2010, I went on the Romance Slam Jam 10th Anniversary cruise which visited two Caribbean islands. In May I took a trip to New York City where one of my plays, Grandmothers, Incorporated, titled after my novel opened off Broadway. In September and again in early October I took a couple of trips to Chicago where another one of my plays, The Trip, was playing. Later in October, I went to the San Francisco Bay Area to chill and to do a book signing and then I drove down to the Monterey Peninsula to just hang out. Who knows where I’ll end up this year. I go with the flow.

BPM: Finish this sentence- "My writing offers the following legacy to future readers..."
My writing offers the following legacy to future readers and that is there is nothing that you can’t do if you have a dream and are willing to exert effort to see that it comes true.

BPM: Introduce us to your book, Stillwaters and the main characters. On Kindle or Nook?
The title of my latest romantic suspense novel is Stillwaters… and my publisher has not put it on Kindle or Nook yet. The main characters are Bev Cameron, a smart, sexy, sophisticated woman in her early fifties and Hollywood agent, Ray Wilson, ten years her junior who has been infatuated with her for years. Unfortunately, she has openly declared her distaste for him, and as powerful and influential as Ray is, he’s at a lost when it comes to attracting Bev. It takes murder and intrigue to get these two personalities together and the road to happy ever after is a rocky one.

BPM: Take us inside the book. What are two major events taking place?
One major event is when Bev’s younger sister, Dana, returns to their hometown of Stillwaters. Dana brings Ray Wilson with her and Bev is less than pleased by the presence of either of them, and when she discovers the reason for Dana’s return to the fold she vows to destroy them both. Another event that takes place is when Ray stumbles upon a shocking secret about Bev’s late husband that threatens to rock both of their worlds.

BPM: Are your characters from the portrayal of real people or experiences?
All of the characters in Stillwaters are fictional, but l did base the grand matriarch of Bev’s maternal family, the Stillwaters clan, on the great Ida B. Wells. Mrs. Wells was a newspaper reporter and anti-lynching crusader during the early twentieth century, and she was fearless. I wanted Bev’s grandmother to possess that same type of temperament and to have passed that kind of strength down to her descendants.

BPM: What specific situation or revelation prompted you to write your book?
Years ago I read about escaped slaves in both North and South America who had formed colonies in the mountains and remained free until emancipation. They were called Maroons and I read that they were proud and defiant, vowing never to become captives again. They would come down from the mountains and fearlessly raid the slaveholders’ plantations. They would take what they needed and wanted including the masters’ human chattel. They’d offer the slaves their freedom, take them back to their colonies and integrated them into their communities.

I was fascinated with the stories that I read about the Maroons and wanted to write a fictional story about the type of people who would have been their descendants. I figured that they would be extraordinary, and that’s how Stillwaters was conceived.  The title of the book comes from the saying that “still waters run deep” and that describes my book’s heroine, Bev Cameron. There are layers to her personality that must be slowly peeled away and revealed as she tries to forge a meaningful relationship with Ray Wilson.

BPM: Who do you want to reach with your book and the message within?
I want to reach any reader who likes a good story, especially one laced with romance and mystery and a touch of history tossed in for good measure.

BPM: What are some of the issues or problems addressed in this book?
One of the issues that I try to address is how limiting life can be if one lives in the past. Doing so can block your blessings, and it is not worth it. Another issue is the importance of family and the legacy that is handed down from one generation to the other.   In Stillwaters Bev Cameron’s family shapes the characters of each of its members with deliberate effort. Expectations are extremely high and Bev’s younger sister, Dana, finds it difficult to live up to such standards.

BPM: Share with us a quote from one of the most powerful chapters.
The quote comes from a scene in which Bev faces her grandmother who after 100 years of living shares with her granddaughter one of her greatest regrets.

“I’ve played the grieving widow longer than you have been alive. It’s been a very lonely existence, and, until the day I die I’ll regret that I closed the door to the joy of being loved by another good man.”

BPM: Ultimately, what do you want readers to gain from your book?
I want readers to realize the unlimited potential of great expectations. In Stillwaters readers will meet a family that grooms its members for greatness with positive results. Yet, with such expectations comes a lot of pressure and responsibility and everyone is not capable of handling that.

OAK BLUFFS
by Joan Early

Lacey leaves her high paying job, the New York social scene, and breaks her engagement to a successful but snobbish attorney to reclaim ancestral land on Martha’s Vineyard and build an equestrian camp to honor her Native American and African American heritage. She learns the property was sold to a local rancher for unpaid taxes. Using her savings, she purchases oceanfront property and livestock, hires a riding instructor from Texas, sight unseen, and prepares to win back her land by competing with the rancher in an equestrian contest at the end of the season.

Three weeks after his scheduled arrival date, the riding instructor, Monroe Faulkner, appears out of nowhere. Lacey doubts the ruggedly handsome stranger is the same man she interviewed on the phone but his skills are vital to her success. Lacey’s grandmother, Pearl, assures her the tension she feels is purely sexual, and predicts certain love between them. Tension grows as Lacey prepares for the camp’s grand opening and eases after the campers arrive and she observes Monroe’s skills.

Just as Lacey accepts Monroe into her heart, her former fiancé arrives and identifies Monroe as wealthy Texas rancher John Tobias. Pearl suffers a fatal heart attach, Camp Noepe wins the contest in Pearl’s memory, and Lacey prepares to leave for New York. John apologizes for his deception and tries to win back the woman he loves in a battle that rages from New York to Denham Wells, Texas. As Pearl had predicted, love prevails.

BOOK REVIEW
5.0 out of 5 stars by R. A Rippy

This review is from: Oak Bluffs

This story was amazing! Not only was it a great romance and relationship story but there was history in the mix about black cowboys and Native Americans. This mix made this story even more amazing. Love it!

CHAPTER 1

Lacey Daigle had driven the mile-long road along Aquinnah Cliffs many times, but still marveled at the colorful diagrams of history in the rows of clay, sand, and fossil-filled gravel. Streams that had formed from melting glaciers cut through the low hills and valleys along South Road. The red brick lighthouse that overlooked Vineyard Sound had guided many sailors around the treacherously rocky shore. She found the beauty and the history of Martha’sVineyard equally fascinating. She loved Aquinnah, the rolling hills of Chilmark, and the up-island area of Oak Bluffs, where her family had owned land since the 1800s. Her ancestral home, Powan House, was built around 1907, when Cottage City was renamed Oak Bluffs. It was that piece of family history that had brought Lacey back to the island.

Looking in the rearview mirror, she caught a glimpse of her image and smiled at the pairing of bloodlines that defined her heritage. Her skin was black. Her features were delicate. High cheekbones were half-hidden behind sheets of raven hair. Dark eyes were heavily hooded with
lashes that fanned out like butterfly wings. Her mouth was wide and full, her lips artfully defined. Her father’s African American and Native American roots were visible, as were the Caribbean influences from her mother’s family. She was tall and willowy. The strength of her heredity was hidden, but easily called upon.

She drove quietly past farms and grazing lands on Middle Road, admiring the backdrop of sparkling water until they reached the vibrant cottages at Oak Bluffs. “Maybe I’m being unreasonable,” she said to the woman sitting next to her. “I just have to try, Mother Pearl.”

“You’re not unreasonable.” The older woman’s eyes clouded with memories. “Powan House is very special to his family. It’s certainly special to me,” she confided. “That’s where your grandfather first kissed me and held me in his arms.”

“Your love for Papa rivals all of the love stories ever written. He must have been blind not to notice your feelings sooner. I want that kind of love.”

“And you shall have it very soon. Your future is clear in my head.”

Pearl, like Lacey’s grandfather, was born on the island. Her cooking skills were well recognized, but Lacey was the only one in the family who believed in her predictions.
Because of that, Lacey’s heartbeat quickened when Pearl declared she would soon find love.

“You mean I haven’t found love with Mason?”

“I can’t say for sure. The faces are not visible. I just see white lace and a big halo of happiness.”

Lacey parked at the county square, but sat behind the wheel, unmoving. Her heart quivered in her chest. So much was riding on the decision of strangers. She removed her wet palms from the steering wheel and placed her forehead where they had been.

“Come on, honey,” Pearl said. “Let’s go in and face the music.”

There was Lamar, the hazel-eyed Adonis who sowed more wild oats than Quaker. . . Sean, an expert at juggling relationships . . . There’s no way she can resist his seductive smile and rock-hard body. . . . Will Dwayne turn out to be the biggest bum of them all? Or will this time be different?   On the road to love and happiness, sometimes we've got to get out of our own way.

Beware Of The Dawgs! By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers

This review is from: The Bum Magnet (Paperback)
Charisse Tyson, for all outside appearances, has it going on. She's a successful real estate agent with the BMW 760 and mansion on the hill to show for it. The laws of attraction have her size 14 curves beckoning to most men that she encounters. But, Charisse will be the first to tell you that seductive curves, a hot car, and successful career aren't everything they're cracked up to be when you don't have anyone to share it with; well anyone other than lying, cheating dawgs. All of the men in Charisse's past and present are fine, charming, and cheating. It may take a little self-evaluation to find out just why Charisse Tyson is a bum magnet.

Forced to spend her second New Year's Eve alone because of another man's betrayal, Charisse finds herself sunken into a depression that is aided by chocolate, vodka and her favorite chaise. When she picks up an article in a popular women's magazine that encourages her to let go of her emotional baggage, Charisse vows to self-assess and stop attracting toxic men. As she turns back the pages of her journal, she re-evaluates her past relationships in hopes to find out just where it all went wrong. But, is it possible that she may be the cause of all of her man-related troubles? When Charisse meets Dwayne Gibson, a sexy home improvement contractor, she breaks a few newly resolved rules. Is he "the one" or just another dawg in disguise? Just what does it take to demagnetize the bums?

K.L. Brady has penned a clever, witty, insightful, and down right hilarious novel with THE BUM MAGNET. From the first page until the very last, I was laughing out loud and wondering just how this new author came up with this stuff. Charisse Tyson is a realistic and likable character with flaws and experiences that most women can relate to. The book flowed nicely, with well-written narrative, snappy dialogue, and a quickly evolving plot. Charisse's offbeat sense of humor coupled with her man-induced drama, had me rapidly turning the pages to find out how she rids herself of her bum magnetism.  This debut author is one to watch. I highly recommend THE BUM MAGNET!   Reviewed by Monique D. Mensah for RAWSISTAZ(tm) Reviewer

Book excerpt - The Bum Magnet by K. L. Brady

Bed, Bath, and Way Beyond

“I didn’t mean to come on so strong,” he said. “I hope I didn’t make you uncomfortable. I’m not shy, and I was
really feelin’ you. You are so . . . irresistible, couldn’t keep my hands to myself.”

Oh, that’s not all you couldn’t keep to yourself.

“I’ve never done anything like that before,” I said, covering my face with the sheet.

He laughed. “It’s okay. I don’t think either of us is going to burn in hell. It just happened; it was just one of those things.”

I rolled out of bed and asked him if I could take a quick shower—didn’t want to walk around smelling like booty all day. I emerged from the bathroom dressed and ready to go about twenty minutes later.

“So, uhhh, we should get going. We’ve got properties to see, papers to sign . . .”

“Dinner to eat?” he interrupted as he stood up and walked toward the bedroom door.

“Dinner to eat?” I responded in shock. “You mean, with me?”

The moment felt almost surreal. He went from jackass to booty call to dinner date in Olympic speed. How did that happen? Must’ve been his naked, Hershey’s ass; they get me every time. But all of a sudden—and at a most inconvenient time—I remembered my quest: discipline, determination, self-control. Oh, hell, my willpower arrived like an hour past late.

Ladies' Man by Frederick Germaine

Damien Hardy had everything early in life. He is an academic and athletic All-American at Crenshaw High in Los Angeles. On top of that, he’s attractive, popular, and most of all madly in love with his beautiful girlfriend named Crystal Gayle. Until one horrific day, he catches Crystal in bed with another man and she breaks his heart. Right then, he vows never to fall in love again or give his heart to a woman.

Damien rescinds his baseball scholarship offer from USC and decides to attend the University of Miami instead. After a disappointing college baseball career, Damien’s best friend Mookie convinces him to relocate to Atlanta.  Mookie schools Damien on the "starting five concept" and Damien never looks back. While in Atlanta, Damien is involved with a plethora of beautiful black women and never can seem to get enough. After many years, love eventually prevails. Damien finds himself trying to make the ultimate choice.

First, Crystal resurfaces when she relocates her medical practice from L.A. to Atlanta. She desperately wants to rekindle her love interest with Damien. Secondly, Diamond springs back into Damien’s life and has the ultimate surprise for him. Then there’s Nicole, who is married and miserable but wants Damien all to herself. She stops at nothing to accomplish this task. But Katrina, the sophisticated high profile corporate attorney, has other plans for Damien. She’s has everything in life, except a man, and now wants him as her "boy toy."  Finally, Tameka who is Diamond’s fake friend has a trick up her sleeve to combat them all.

Does love conquer all or will Damien continue to be just another ladies’ man?
